Yankees News and Notes | Another Matinee Game

By Gary W. Marchese Jr.

Bronx, NY (July 1) – The New York Yankees will be taking on the Toronto Blue Jays in the first of three this afternoon in a rare Friday afternoon game.

The New York Yankees have not been swinging the bats especially well the last few days.  Alex Rodriguez though has started to heat up.  His home run today was his fourth in the last seven games.

The Yankees are very happy July has come; they have not had a losing month of July since 1993.  The Yankees also have never led the division on July 1 and not won the division since 1995.  Here are some more news and notes from around the Yankees.

The Elias Sports Bureau states that Robinson Cano and Mark Teixeira are just two of six players to have started every one of his team’s games this season.  The other players are Ichiro Suzuki, Michael Young, Prince Fielder, and Ryan Howard.

Brett Gardner was back in the lineup today, he was banged up but he is a battler, he is the type of player that will be banged up because of his constant all out effort.  You have to admire a player like him.

Sabathia is undefeated in his last 15 starts at Yankee Stadium including today.  He was 10-0 with a 2.10 ERA and 188 opponent’s batting average against coming into today’s game in his last 14 starts at the Stadium.  The Yankees are now 13-2 in those 15 starts.  He has the longest such winning streak in the majors.

The Yankees are 14-2 in games immediately following a shutout loss since the start of the 2008 season.  They are 9-1 in their last 10 games.

Derek Jeter has gone 14 straight games without an RBI the longest such streak of his career.  The previous high was 13 games in 2004.  Including the 7-0 loss to Seattle on Wednesday night Javier Vazquez has been the losing pitcher in three of the team’s four shutouts this season.  He is one of the guys that just doesn’t get run support much like Johan Santana on the Mets.

Dustin Mosely has been called up to the majors to go into the bullpen.  The Yankees optioned reliever Boone Logan back to the minor leagues.  Here are the lineups for a Friday afternoon game.

Yankees Lineup: Jeter (SS), Swisher (RF), Teixeira (1B), Rodriguez (3B), Cano (2B), Posada (DH), Granderson (CF), Cervelli (C), Gardner (LF)

Toronto Lineup: Lewis (LF), Gonzalez (SS), Bautista (RF), Wells (CF), Lind (DH), Hill (2B), Overbay (1B), Buck (C), Hoffpauir (3B)
