Bronx, NY (June 11) – The New York Yankees defeated the Houston Astros by the score of 9-3 this afternoon. Javier Vazquez made the start and pitched seven innings giving up three runs on six hits. Vazquez struck out six and didn’t walk a batter. The Yankees were the bronx bombers today with Derek Jeter hitting two home runs and Jorge Posada hitting a grand slam.
Jeter got the Yankees off and running with a leadoff home run. With the home run, Jeter tied Rickey Henderson with 24 career lead-off home runs. Jeter is now at the top of the all-time franchise list. Posada hit his 250th career home run and it was announced after the game that he will catch tomorrow. Posada had been struggling but also added a single today and he will be very excited to be back behind the plate. Vazquez is now 6-5 on the season and has been great in his last seven starts.
The Astros grabbed a 2-1 lead in the third inning. The Yankees came right back in the bottom of the inning and scored five times to take the lead for good. Jeter walked stole second and advanced to third base on the errant throw. Nick Swisher drove him home with an RBI single. Mark Teixeira walked and Robinson Cano hit a infield single to load the bases. Jorge Posada stepped up to the plate and delivered a grand slam to give the Yankees a 6-2 lead. The Astros would make it 6-3 in the sixth inning on a solo home run by Carlos Lee. Jeter hit a three run home run in the bottom of the sixth to give the Yankees the 9-3 lead and that is how the score ended up.
The Yankees will go for the sweep tomorrow afternoon with Phil Hughes on the mound. The Yankees did suffer another injury during the game. Marcus Thames left with a hamstring strain. It looks like Alex Rodriguez will be out until Tuesday and Brett Gardner is still nursing a bad thumbnail, the Yankees are once again a little thin. The Yankees moved to 16 games over 500 for the first time this season and trail the Tampa Bay Rays by 1/2 a game in the AL East. If the Rays lose, tonight they will be tied for first place.
