Senator Durbin Tries GOP Ignores Pressing Need for Nation's Unemployment Extension Crisis
By: T. Cahill
Washington, D.C. (Jun 22) – Senator Dick Durbin (D-IL), Majority Whip, tried valiantly during this morning’s Senate session to address the current GOP Party’s pity party about deficit spending and their lack of economic understanding that not only do millions of Americans depend on the Senate making the right and only decision regarding unemployment extensions, but the outright two-faced approach the Republicans have maintained from the Great Depression to this very day.

(Minutes 20:26 – 29:41)
Immediately after Senator Durbin’s conclusion, his entire presentation of facts and needs was dismissed and the continued subject of nominations was taken up.
Nine minutes devoted this morning to the unemployment crisis; nine minutes.
Nominations, more grandstanding about health care, and the border patrol are what the Senate deemed important during its morning session today, not the pressing concerns of financial assistance for millions of unemployed.
Yesterday’s summary of the afternoon Senate session also saw the glaring disregard of unemployed millions. A complete and utter disregard to give individuals and families the ways and means of feeding their families, and keeping a roof over their heads, as so many continue to hunt, fruitlessly, for jobs that do not exist.
The June 21st session was more concerned with votes regarding the nomination of Marc T. Treadwell, of Georgia, to be United States District Judge for the Middle District of Georgia, and confirming Mark A. Goldsmith, of Michigan, to be United States District Judge for the Eastern District of Michigan.
While confirmations are important, what is even more important to note is that the afternoon session started around 2 p.m. and finished up at 7:27 p.m. EDT. During the entire almost 5.5 hours, the subject of H.R. 4213 and the much needed unemployment extensions and attendant motions was never on their radar.
The Senate session began, not with the resolution of current pressing business at hand, but with the introduction of four new bills and two resolutions, text of which is not yet available at Thomas.loc.gov. With two weeks, yet another break, and then the remaining four weeks left of the 111th Congress, the unemployed are back burner material.
Next up yesterday? S.2724 regarding the Lake Tahoe Basin and its environmental restoration and forest management activities, moving along to training for Federal building personnel, and then on to authorizing “appropriations for the National Historical Publications and Records Commission through fiscal year 2014, with amendments. (S. Rept. No. 111-213)”.
Then, although Father’s Day was Sunday, the ever important “Recognizing the Contributions of Fathers: Committee on the Judiciary was discharged from further consideration of S. Res. 560, recognizing the immeasurable contributions of fathers in the healthy development of children, supporting responsible fatherhood, and encouraging greater involvement of fathers in the lives of their families, especially on Father’s Day, and the resolution was then agreed to.”
How fathers will be able to contribute to the healthy development of their children, be responsible fathers, if they are jobless appeared a comparision beyond their feeble minds. Perhaps it is only some fathers that are more important that others?
Next, in typical times, pausing to designate June 25, 2010, as National Huntington’s Disease Awareness Day would have been a good idea, but with thousands of diseases, including ALS, MS, Parkinson’s and so many others, was yesterday really the day to spend time making this “important” business on the Senate floor? I say this not to offend but to point out that prioritizing seems almost beyond the Senate’s abilities.
More nominations, in addition to the ones mentioned earlier, many more, followed.
After a busy morning firmly spent ignoring the fact that as of last Friday, the Senators left for the weekend without addressing the most pressing need within this country, unemployment extensions and benefits, and jobs creation, it appears the new week, to date, is a repeat of last week.
It apparently is so easy to ignore those pesky unemployed.

Just remember these senators not only on Nov….But now…They have to go home sometime and face us….I pray that they get whats comin to them!!!!!!!!WHAT EVER IT MAY BE!!!!
I Agree!!
That is what it is going to come too, these senator’s don’t realize people are starving and ending up homeless. Eventually the long term unemployed will see prison as an alternative to having nothing to eat or no where to sleep and it just may be a senator or their family’s life that could end in result! I hate to say that but it is very true, there are no jobs out there and they could care less what turmoil these families are going through. Until their family or their life is turned upside down maybe they will begin to understand.
As Marie Antonette said, “if the don’t have bread, let them eat cake!” A statement she appoligized for, as the people led her to the chopping block.
Maybe if we ignore the problem it will go away on it’s own….. Hum Duh.
how can the U.S Senate forget about the heart and soul of this country….THE PEOPLE…..I never asked for this “being on unemployment”…I would take a job in a heart beat if I could only find one!!!!Why is that?Is that because the same people that screwed the this country up…Our now deciding that the 90 million americans effected Do not matter anymore?Yes people 90 million….If you figure that for every 1 person filing for unemployment at least 5 are affected within every house hold “give or take” but either way it’s the facts!!!I hope today the real victims of the economy get some justice….At least I will continue to pray for it!
I ran out of unemployment last week, the Alabama UC office posted on their website that Governor Riley had approved an up to 20 weeks extension called HEB, so I thought I was going to be OK.
Now to website say:
“Although the Alabama High Unemployment Extended Benefits Compensation program (HEB) was reinstated by Governor Bob Riley in April 2010, the U S Congress has not approved funding to extend the HEB period to allow payment to be made for any weeks after June 5, 2010.
If you are still unemployed, you should continue to file weekly certifications as usual. You will be notified by mail if you are entitled to additional benefits.”
Unbelievable! now I have about $50 left which was actually the money to pay my phone bill, that I am trying my best to keep my phone on, because companies cannot hire me if they cannot reach me.
I am here trying to stretch a can of oatmeal and a few can goods I have in my pantry (because of course regular cereal is a luxury right now because that includes spending more buying milk)
I just pray to GOD ALMIGHTY to intervene, it just sad that all day long all focus was on the “Runaway General” while some many people are stressed out over loosing their homes and having food on the table.
How much many did it cost to fly the General to the White House? I am just hoping he brought back some MREs for the unemployed.
Just plug the damn hole and get this bill for unemployment passed.Republicans are out of work to……
I am appalled! How can the Senate continue to ignore the U.S. citizens who are currently unemployed through no fault of our own? What a bunch of self-serving, self-absorbed asses! It must be because they know there is nothing we can do about this situation. Even if we vow to vote them out in November, it doesn’t really matter to them. November is a long time from now. I am just utterly amazed at the lack of care for fellow citizens. Bet they got their paycheck this week and will continue to get their paycheck and not have to wait until someone decides if they should get a check. Maybe we should just send all our unpaid bills to the Senate for payment.
JLK if you find a way to do this please let me know becuz I know if the shoe were on the other foot-they would be rushing to approve the extension (just like they did when it was the $787 Billion they approved in a rush for all their large Wall Street contributors)!!! Amen. Their time will come and Nov. will not be soon enough!!!
Are you SERIOUS? NINE MINUTES? I have a thought for all of you in the senate. Keep it up. I am relatively sane, although I think that my sanity is slipping now, as worry, fear, and loathing spring up in the place of optimism and trust. I maintained faith in the Senate through some dark times, but that faith has been repaid with disdain. Millions of Americans are being told not even to bother job hunting. The jobs that ARE available are being given to the EMPLOYED! WHERE IS THE JUSTICE IN THAT? Your hiring incentives have failed. If the unemployed are being passed over, then it is apparent that your incentive program is ineffective. There needs to be a better incentive program to inspire businesses to hire unemployed people. It needs to have all the strength that the senate can throw behind it. If you can get even half the unemployed working, that would do more for economic recovery than ANYTHING else.
Prioritizing is of course beyond many hypocritical hooverites in Congress also known as Republicants and some others in other groups professing to represent the needs of their citizenry. It is like reasoning with Osama Bin Laden on the whether acts of terror are a good thing or a bad thing. So not only prioritizing but unreasonable dogma is hard to overcome.
I feel like I am living a nightmare. We can go to the aid of all these other places fight a war that should have been over long ago and have goverment bail out all these businesses but we can’t help our own? They wanna talk spending NOW? I don’t think any of them understand the reality out here. I have been unemployed since Dec. of 2008, I would love to have a job. I don’t want this but there is nothing out there. I am pretty sure no one is going to hire me when in just a couple weeks I am with my grand children in tow living in my SUV. What happened to by the people for the people? I guess that is only for those in goverment. Why is our president doing nothing to address this? The goverment isn’t helping our own but sending millions over seas, I don’t know about the rest of you but it makes no sense to me. To top all this off they won’t even address the issue. WE ALL NEED TO MAKE OUR VOTE COUNT! With so many of us unemployed they will feel the sting!
Yes, where is President Obama! I remember last February when all this started, he was making his voice loud and clear that unemployed Americans should not miss even one check! One month emergency extension may not be ideal, but at least we could be assured of paying one more month’s bills, putting a little food on the table. I keep thinking this is a nightmare, things like this aren’t supposed to happen in the United States!
Right now, the local pawn shop is my best friend. I have pawned everything I can and my car goes at the end of the week. How will I get around, a bicycle. What about job interviews? That’s a laugh, I haven’t had even one in the nearly two years I am unemployed and I have a Master’s degree. I have no savings, I live on my own and no one to count on but me. Thankfully, I don’t have to see my children suffering like some of you! My heart goes out to all of you. I agree, we need to make our votes count, but how do we know it won’t be just another politician lying out of both sides of their mouth.
I think we all ought to fax all our disconnect notices, eviction notices, and everything else that shows the financial devastation we are going through to the bastards.
Hang tough everyone! Maybe there are some among us who will run for office?
If I were a Senator in Washington I would look over my shoulder every moment!
This goverment just get our money and then just live us without help just to make them richer. While there’s children living in the streets, goverment eat well at home, drive nice cars and send moeny to Irak or Afg. just because there’s a lot of GAS there and that’s what they care about. They only care about the money they can suck, becuase they are like Vampires.
To all people who think the unemployed is lazy, I’ll tell you I’ve been looking for a job since I got laid off from my previous company because I was making 17/ hour and they got a new person to do my job for $13/ hour. I’ve been 6 months unemployed and I have not find any job. I’m not in drugs, alcohol, I’m a proffesional and always paid my taxes. But that’s what the american goverment just gives. We are not asking for getting more than 2 years of benefits But we are now asking for those who have not get the 99 weeks other people got, like me to be able to get those weeks like every body else did in the las 2 years. It’s unfair, it’s not human, and it’s ridiculous to send money to other countries and have hour children, our people, the one who pay the senator’s nice car, house and fancy life style and the half of bills. I say half of bills beacuse the other half of their bills are paid with the money they all steal.
WE ARE AMERICA. UNEMPLOYED NEEDS HELP “NOW” or something very very bad will happen.
We need to march not only in Washington DC but in every major city of US. We are desperate.
LET STOP THEIR GAME.
The republican’s weren’t worried about the deficit when that big insurance company and their friends the Wall Street execs were giving themselves bonuses with taxpayer money!!! Next election – let Congress feel the sting of the unemployment lines!!! – How many years have you paid taxes? 30? 40? Your government bails out bankers and Wallstreet execs using your tax dollars – but unemployment is allowed to expire? What happened to “by the people” or “for the people”? Or are the big campaign contributors the only “people” who count to congress? They are playing games AGAIN FOR THE THIRD TIME while you are wondering how to feed your kids? Figure it out! Malfeasance – Failure of a public official to perform their duties!!! Next Election MAKE YOURSELF MATTER BY VOTING!!! 10% unemployment carries 10% of the vote! Use it!! Fire them all next election or recall every Congress member NOW for Malfeasance – Failure of a public official to perform their duties!!! Next Election – Lets get people elected who actually represent tall the People- this current congress represents only special interest groups!
Alex, you are correct about the special interest groups. I heard that Senator Hatch would like to institute drug and alcohol testing for people on unemployment. That’s an expensive and useless undertaking. Of course, I heard that his son is a pharmaceutical lobbiest. If it it lines their pockets or those of their friends, our public representatives get very interested. There is no profit in doing their jobs correctly and fairly.
JUST WAIT TILL NEXT ELECTION. THEY ALL MUST GO. MY FAMILY IS HAVING TO MOVE BECAUSE WE CAN’T PAY RENT NOW THAT UNEMPLOYMENT HAS STOPPED. THIS IS A SHAME TO ME AND OUR COUNTRY. LET’S GIVE ALL OF THE MONEY TO OTHER COUNTRIES INSTEAD OF HELPING US. AGAIN, PEOPLE PUT THEM ALL OUT COME ELECTION TIME.
Republicans think if we stop or hold off everything that will help the little man we will be able to get the Democrats majority out because they have did nothing but added more debt. Then we the Republicans can work on the President’s job next. Message to all the unemployed and people that are struggling to make ends meet. Don’t be a fool, you can see that party control means more than you and me. Remember this in November and vote them out. The little man is the majority, all we have to do is vote.
OMG!!!!! What are they thinking??? People are already going hungry, losing their cars, homes and health insurance even with these juicy unemployment checks. What is going to happen to us when there is nothing? I am 63 years old and retraining through the government’s WIA program to go into the health care field. I am only on tier 2 with about two week’s worth of benefits left. I am physically unable to dig ditches and so many other things that the kind Republicans suggest. They think that everyone is holding out, drawing their unemployment checks, and waiting for a better paying job. Everyone I know in this situation would take anything that they were physically and legally able to do at this time if it were offered. At least I have one alternative. I can go ahead and file early for my social security. Of course, that is going to cost me $300 a month in the long run. It is something I can depend on – maybe. Who knows, that’s the federal government too. It will also take 45 days to three months to get it started. That’s a long time with nothing. I should have already filed, but I had faith that our congress would do the right thing. Now I have no illusions, and I will remember in November. A lot of the unemployed are talking about going to Washington to demonstrate. Only problem is that no one has the money to get there.
Watching C Span – Unfortunate as these times are the positive side of this is people that have never really paid attention to the legislative process before are now watching C Span. Because we have a very important agenda (Unemployment Extension) we watch with contempt as our government representative’s waste valuable time discussing trivial issues. While fellow American families go without money for food, mortgage, rent or travel expenses to search for any jobs that may be available.
You would think each day these people would spend every working minute to pass legislation and get the ball rolling ASAP on unemployment. When they do get around to the unemployment issue and you hear them say NO over and over during the roll call or show a THUMBS DOWN sign with enthusiasm it makes you very angry and wonder do these people have a clue? Also understand that some want to do away with the additional 25 dollar federal addition to save money on your TAXED unemployment payment. The current bill being reviewed does not include the people over 99 weeks. In addition people covered by this bill may soon become 99ers as well. Not everyone is aware that the people over 2 years (99 weeks) are not covered in this bill. When this bill is passed we will still have to wait for ANOTHER bill to be passed for us. If you have 98 paid weeks and this bill is passed you will only receive 1 week of pay. Then you too will become a 99er without a check!
Everyone on unemployment is complaining about the outsourcing of jobs to other countries. Has anyone considered the problem of outsourcing our natural resources like British Petroleum (BP) drilling oil in the US. Are there any US oil companies drilling in the UK? Also how many other countries are out sourcing TO the US? I can understand other countries investing in the US but what is the rate of return? Do they pay more taxes or fewer taxes than US companies? Do they pay a tariff for monetary gains that are leaving our country? Or does our government give them big
You fools(GOP)-its not one million unemployed-IT ONE MILLION AMRERICAN FAMILIES!!!
Everything they have GONE!
Thats over FIVE MILLION American citizens!
“It apparently is so easy to ignore those pesky unemployed” the last sentence from the above article…but it’s not so easy for us who are unemployed..to ignore our bills…house payment, car payments, phone bills, electric bills…etc….
I live in a household that has two people out of work, my wife and myself. We are both running out of benefits in a few weeks. We both used to make over 70k a year, now the wife has been out of work for a yearand a half, me for 10 months. The thing that keeps tearing at me are the statements that we need to learn to settle for lower paying jobs. We both are more than willing to do that, but no one will let us, we have tried! We both keep hearing the OVERQUALIFIED line again and again. When are they going to get it?
I forgot to mention that we are both also over 50, and that is sadly becoming the new 60 when it comes to finding a job, how sad. If this extension dosent get passed, the ensuing results will be frightning Im afraid. God bless and good luck to all!
I am unemployed, and feel betrayed by our government. When this vote was first brought up to me, I was assured that it was no big deal, and would be passed with no problems. I didn’t find out that I would not recive another check until 2 weeks ago. I am a mother of three, with a BA degree, and 5 years experience. In the last year I have applied for approximately 75 jobs, which I qualified for, and only got 2 calls for interviews. Maybe if all unemployed Americans stood up together and each one of them filed bankrupcy it would help the Senate to realize that if they don’t fix this problem it will become their worst nightmare!
Again as usual looking for work, since early this morning. As usual came up empty handed. We will be in touch. Then I finally get home this afternoon praying my tires will hold off, to find the senate not saying anything. I am on the edge. Welcome to depression 2010 by the US Republicans, if I can make it with no home, no car no food and can somehow get to the polls in November, I will not vote for a single one of them.
Until the higher up experience what we are experiencing its easy to say we cant approve or where are we going to get the money, i do understand you have few that are not looking for jobs but you have many that are. I rather have a job than to wait on unemployment yes, i feel they need to put more jobs out there and look at the spending of the higher up to keep people from being laid off due to the economy. Please make a decesion we are suffering cant pay rent lights gas.
Don’t know about you, but in my state I checked the net worth of the State Representative and Senator’s net worth, both well over $2,000,000 plus, each!
How many measly unemployment checks does it take to equal 2-plus million dollars?? Now if every senator and congressman is worth that much money, you do the math; that is well over $200,000,000 plus for the senators alone, not counting the congressmen.
Who do they think paid those salaries to them? The working public who is no longer working thanks be to job elimination from their legislation to send jobs overseas.
Thank you T. Cahill and worldnewsvine.com for not ignorning this like the rest of the corporate media. If CNN and the major network news departments put heat on the senators’ necks over this issue they’d move on it real fast. Instead they seem to be in fantasy land right now, soaking up advertising revenue by contstantly showing the oil-soaked beaches on the gulf coast. It’s amazing that a 24/7 news network only has time to cover the same four or five stories all day and night.
Missing from the story is the fact that unemployment is still at 9.5%. And although new unemployment claims have dropped every months since January, they actually rose in May, some 400,000 newly unemployed.
Unfortunately this recession, despite the denial of the major news networks, is not going away quite as quickly as they seem to want to just wish it away.
I pray God takes action against those who hold such power and neglect so many. seems like those senators souls might well burn, I hope I can see their flames in the afterlife.
I have been unemployed for over a year. I have looked for work, I have been everywhere, fast food wont hire me because they would rather hire a teenager, than a 36 year old single mother of 1. I have been to every online website, looking for jobs and in my field I have found 3 in the entire state. All of which would require me to relocate, which I dont necessarily have a problem with, however it costs money to relocate. Also, the majority of the jobs are for people with bachelors degree, which unfortunately I do not have. I am not living “high on the hog” while receiving unemployment benefits, I am only living…and now Im struggling to do that. My phone is about to be turned off, ever tried getting a job with no contact number, Im about to lose my home, and my child sold some of his things, just so that I could pay our electric bill. Please help us, All of Us!!! When are they going to get it. Believe me, I will remember this in November!! God Bless
man if i ever have money again im outta this currupted country, Karma is a bitch
congress, you think the economy is bad now, wait, people wont stand for your corrupted ways much longer. let them play their games. they have been on a 2 hour lunch and now they are just standing around and bsing on cspan
who needs terroists when we have Republican Senators.
It seems to me a lot of stories I’ve read are about the 50+ people losing their jobs. What is going on in this country. The boomers have all the knowledge to pass along, but corporate America seem more interested in higher at sub-wages. Not only are the politicians a problem, clearly the people that DO have jobs have forgotten us as well. I am a highly-skilled person with skills employers are begging for, but with all the resumes I send out EACH DAY, they all result in the same thing: no response, or a “we selected another candidate”.. I haven’t been able to get a single interview in over 3 months.
So, what now? food stamps, assisted housing? medical help from the State… aren’t these just more govt. programs taxes support?
It’s horrible how the unemployed is put on the back burner! You can clearly see that none of their families are in this situation! I am not one of the unemployed but my fiance is and we rely on his income to survive. Without his income we are possibly going to lose our home. We have two children and one on the way.It is very stressful not knowing if when I go in the hospital will my new baby and I have a place to come home to.I bet if they were in this situation they would be feeling the same way we are. We’re not looking for handouts! How can they keep putting this as a last priority instead of the main priority.
Man my family is hurting! I don’t know what to do……I wish I was offered a job to turn down. I don;t know what to do.
i lost my job in nov of 2009 i just got custody of my 3 grandchildren my enmployment check stopped this week im not getting any help right now from the government to help raise my grandchildren and now i have no money coming in.you big shot senators sit in ur fancy homes drive ur big cars and eat dinner every night.i cant see how anybody can sleep at night knowing its ur fault were not getting our money to keep us survive.but come nov we will remember each one of you who kept us from getting help.ive worked since i was 16 yrs old and this is the first time i have ever been out of work .now when i need help i cant get it.we send money to other countires to help them but the hell with who you should be helping
Please help! were out of money ! ALL of us! get it together uncle sam
After 30 years of building this countries roadways, schools, homes, churches, federal and state buildings, I have become unemployed and UNneeded! When the bottom fell out of the construction industry, I knew it was time for a change. I have been back in school for 1 1/2 years and have almost 2 years to go to complete my program in the medical field. I feel fortunate to recieve the education but without the tier 5 extension, I can’t afford basic living expenses. I have NO debt, I hanve NO credit cards, NO vehicle payments but I would like a place to live and food. Without people like me and other constrution workers, you republican politicians would not have your nice homes to live in – you couldn’t build it! Stop throwing OUR EARNED money away and give it to the USA unemployed citizens so we may survive and begin again. THIS IS A RESULT OF YOUR SELFISH SPENDING, NOT OURS.
I think what they are NOT saying is more scary than what they are not doing. I believe they are slowly coming around to the conclusion that this isn’t any temporary aberration that temporary extensions are going to solve. This just may be the new normal for the long haul. Time for plan B whatever that is.
we have lost our jobs , (through no fault of our own- you cant get unemployment for failing drug tests or running over someone, you get it for being laid-off,lack of work) brought on by greedy politicians letting bankers run wild, – (thx bush and crew) now they want to play with our money they took from us while we worked for THEM! and ignore us! oh how i hate this game! america, the land where they steal from the poor and give to the rich. its for real people, rise up, viva revolution!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
beth i know there are rules to how the goverment worksand how a law has to go thru several departments before it goes to the president . well enough is enough the senators republic and democrats alike cant seem to get anything done, wellits time for the president to override them and do something i know the gulf coast is a bad situation and they all need help too but while he (the president) is focusing on that the unemployed are sinking because they wont pass as extension i have been out of work for almost two years and not because i wanted to i absolutely loved my job and i would go back in a heart beat if they would call me,but that is not goning to happpen and i along with others need help NOW!!!!!!!
Dont forget in November people…”NEVER FORGET” make sure you have an address to use and register to vote, we “NEED” these Obstructionists out!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Please!!!!!! We need the unemployment extension bill to be approved desporately. There is no jobs available and we are not milking the system, without the unemployment benefit we will be homeless until the economy turns around. Someone please move forward with the bill ASAP or millions of us are doomed.
WE MUST TELL OUR FRIENDS AND FAMILY, REMEMBER how the REPUBLICANS have rudely ignored the unemployed Americans in need. VOTE THEM OUT 2010 and 2012.
NO EXCUSES… VOTE ALL THE REPUBLICANS OUT !!!
what the hell is wrong with our government? dont they understand that no matter what they’re going to end up paying for this no matter what if it be prison or welfar. at least if they r given the unemployment there’s a chance the money can go back into the economy
I cannot believe the disdain the Republican Senators are presenting to the American public. They just don’t care for anything other than their petty pork. This could very well be the GOP’s Waterloo. They will surely rot in hell for what they are doing to the unemployed.
Lord help them for they know not what they are doing++++
I guess I should apply for foreign aid, then I’d surely get the money I need to feed my family. God knows they’re not giving it to Americans.
I think all of us who have had our unemployment stopped because of this debacle should pack up and head on up to the Whitehouse and set us up our own little “Hooverville” on the Whitehouse lawn. Do ya think that would get anyone’s attention?
Not sure how we could afford to get there though. I just thought it sounded like a good idea. This is absolutely sickening. Who cares about some water basin project at this point!
CONGRESS CAUSED THE ECONOMIC CRISIS. They have since voted to take care of the banks, to take care of the hedge fund managers, to take care of AIG and other big corporations. While these entities Congress voted to help are recovering nicely, they have not bothered to create new jobs, have they. In fact, I hear lots of companies are saying “the unemployed need not apply.” Republicans, and I used to be one of them, are still thick-as-thieves with big business.
We unemployed need a way to unite. I wonder, would Congress have the nerve to stare us in the face as we march together? We need unemployment extended, but in addition, Congress needs to create jobs. Anyone who has the slightest understanding of economics knows that until people get back to work and start paying taxes, the enconomy will not recovery. For those of you who still have jobs, your future financial stability is directly related to all of us who are unemployed. You should be speaking up on our behalf because getting us back to work helps you and your families. WE ARE IN THIS TOGETHER whether you like it or not.
CONGRESS, STOP PLAYING POLITICS WITH OUR LIVES. WE WANT TO GO BACK TO WORK, BUT IN THE MEANTIME, WE NEED OUR UNEMPLOYMENT EXTENDED.
i can’t bear to watch cspan or read the articles any more. I am in tier one and my unemployment will stop within a few weeks if this is not extended. I don’t know what my family is going to do. I have to find homes for my animals – i am still waiting for my loan to try to be modified – how can i do anything with no money at all. I’m ready to end it all right now – i cannot bear the thought of being homeless and I have applied to at least 300 jobs – with three interviews – what is a person in their mid 50′s supposed to do.
Not to repeat all the true sentiment of all these good people but where is our PRESIDENT???
This issue seems to be on the back burner because of our great Republican party once again.
Big business and Wall Street mentality runs this party. We are the little people that the chairman of BP spoke of.
We have the Gulf ,The General, we have Israel and what else they can find. Watch the news and you will find nothing but inflated or false figures.
God Bless us all.
we need to march on dc
If I only had all the taxes back that I have paid in the past!At least a couple of hundered dollars a week over a 15 year period. All the unemployed paid into those taxes, so what I want to know is what for? When we the people need help the most we can’t get it! Oh I forgot, all the money we paid is going to other countries and into the senators pockets because God knows they will not miss a paycheck!
I have been waiting 1 1/2 years for my SSDI. I have MS and lost my job of 30 yars in 2008. I have been collecting UC since January last year. All these government agencies seem to have one thing in common-they all want to see you fail. Don’t know why that is. I can not physically do any other job so I am at the mercy of the government-there’s ascary thought for sure.
I applied for several different financial aide’s but was denied because I make to much on UC! I am going into 4th month behind on house and couldn’t pay property taxes last year.
I don’t care what will happen in November (actually I do), but I am more concerned about now.
I am sooo sick of all this..I too have been looking for work and take my job search seriously..I am a single mom who has been unemployed almost six months and my state benefits will end in about 2 weeks. I was told that is when tier 1 begins and it would give me a little more time to look for a job. I have sold a car, had 4 garage sales and my son just turned 16 and is desperately looking for work so he can help out. We may not be able to pay next months rent and forget the electric and water. It is over 100 degree’outside and i am scared to run the air conditoner. I lost my job due to outsourceing oversee’s and have a college degee in marketing. I have sold several things on E bay and may well have to sell it all. I have no parents, both deceased, and no one at all to really “borrow” from. I am a worried mess and last week was told that i have a heart condtion. I can’t go get the echocardiagram that i need as it is expensive and i have no health insurance. I’m thankful for the health care bill that passed but may be dead before it could ever help me out. These people need our prayers, really they do, so maybe their hearts can be softened and changed. How can you call yorself a Christian and have so little regard for human suffering..Good luck to all of you and you are all in my prayers…God Bless
Senators, let me remind you of what our Country stands for:
One Nation, under GOD, with LIBERTY and JUSTICE for ALL!!!! You should be thinking of the American people FIRST, and your “political agenda” last. Shame on you.
Signed,
Mother of 3 children, unemployed after working 11 years at my company due to “downsizing” and no fault of my own in October of 2009.
Please vote all the incubents out, they all suck.
I CAN NOT BELIEVE THESE (MOSTLY) REPUBLICAN SENATORS AND CONGRESSMEN ARE DOING THIS TO THE AMERICAN PEOPLE WHO ARE SO IN NEED IN THESE VERY HARD TIMES. IS IT THEY JUST DON’T CARE IF THERE ARE MORE HOMELESS, STARVING AMERICANS! THE AMERICAN CITIZEN’S NEED ALL THE HELP THEY CAN GET RIGHT NOW! I AM SORRY, BUT WE NEED TO HELP AMERICAN’S NOW, NOT EVERY OTHER COUNTRY IN THE WORLD. ENOUGH IS ENOUGH, PASS THE H. R. 4213 BILL FOR UNEMPLOYMENT EXTENSIONS! AND DO IT NOW BEFORE THIS COUNTRY IS IN WORSE SHAPE THAN IT ALREADY IS IN! WAKE UP US GOVERNMENT!
They Republicans are forgetting the most important thing, the unemployed are voters. We are merely looking for work, and they are penalizing us for it. Sweep them out in the midterms and this kind of politics will end.
I have always voted Republican, so has my parents, and their parents. I was laid off last year from my job of 20 years when my employer sold his business. 3 months later, my husband, who was a contractor for the gvmt., was laid off due to downsizing. We are not lazy people. We have both worked continously all of our adult lives and neither has EVER been on unemployment…until now. I have not received a check for 2 weeks now and my husband has 3 weeks until he no longer receives a check. We have 3 children. I have seen many, many other letters and stories just like mine. I will tell you this….my “Republican” family as well as their “Republican” friends WILL NOT FORGET how this has affected us come election time this Nov. I WILL be changing my vote from now and moving forward!!!!
Keep calling your Senators, folks! We overloaded their phone lines yesterday, it’s time to do it again! Let them know that we won’t go away until they’ve listened! Get your family and friends to call too!
I’m sick and tired of people telling me I’m lazy and need to “get off my ass and get a job” by people who have absolutely no idea what I’ve gone through trying to find employment. Every day I go online, look in the paper, and send out resumes for the few jobs I can find that I’m qualified for. In 13 months I’ve had one interview. All of those other resumes just seemed to have disappeared. I don’t like being unemployed. I really want a job. I can’t stress this enough. But if I don’t get an extension on my unemployment I’m going to lose my house. How does that help the economy?
No more excuses! PASS AN UNEMPLOYMENT EXTENSION NOW!!!
screw the republicans!!!!!!
I have always been a republican, and voted republican, but the longer they draw out this unemployment bill, the more I am thinking about becoming a democrat. Even though neither of the parties are really doing anything great, the dems seam to be doing just a tiny bit more than the reps. What we really need is a whole new party!
Everyday when I watch cspan, I want to puke!!!
These a-hole senators are only looking out for themselves. They don’t care what happens to us, and they sure as hell aren’t living up to what they promised! Not even close! They are all liars that will only do things that get them ahead and there is really no good choice but as it seems now, the dems are the lesser of two evils.
God bless all of you who are suffering right now and don’t know where your next meal will come from.
I am an educated single mom with experience. I have worked since I was 14 1/2 beginning w/ McDonalds. I have always been able to find something to make things meet since my college days. I have been unemployed since May of 2008. I was blessed to find a job Jan 2010 only to be laid off yet again on my 89th day. *ugghh* talk about emotional rollercoaster. My benefits exhausted last week…YES, I am a 99er!! I will be losing my apartment in two weeks, and don’t have any leads for jobs. I send on an average of 20 resumes a day up to the wee hours of the morning searching for jobs anywhere. No replies. I WANT TO WORK!! I LIKE WORKING!! It brings a sense of self fullfilment, for I am not a lazy person. I only have 1 child, however, she will have to experience us being homeless in a couple of weeks. I pray that this will not be a lasting effect on her. I do not have family to help out… I am totally dependant on myself. I pray for all of you in similar situations, the stories are heart-wrenching. Something has to be done, I pray and just keep breathing. I am so exhausted from desperation of looking for work. My days are so full from going to employment programs from my state to looking for jobs in areas I missed. I am socially and financially oboslete!!! Please God help us all!! Keep your heads up America!! ;-)
Actually the money for the unemployment extensions is there in unused stimulus money. The Republicans want to use it rather than increasing the deficit (even though it’s a little late for that), but the Democrats don’t want to touch it (of which i truly can’t understand why). In other words, a bunch of stubborn old men and women in Washington have the country by the short hairs and could seemingly care less. They bail out corporate greed without thinking about it, send our jobs overseas, give aid to any country they want under their thumbnail, yet we the people come last, if at all. What a country.
There is no available “Stimulus” money it has been earmarked for projects designed to create jobs…. I cannot understand why the pigheaded republicans refuse to use recaptured TARP monies, which we know, is available NOW! The problem is the republikans have refused to allow the use of TARP monies designed to bailout their rich friends on Wall Street well knowing they plan on ripping off American’s again in the near future
this must be done now! i watched cspan all day today and i am shocked by what and every basis the republicans dispute from. just unreal how this fiasco has been allowed to continue. i have been unemployed for only 6 months.. i have not even colloected past 26 weeks and already i am cut off. it’s either i pay my electric bill or put food on the table. these republicans disgust me! lets see them get rid of those expense account lunches.. that should eliminate a few million from the deficit. i know where my votes are going come november!!!

NO MORE EXCUSES – EXTEND THE UNEMPLOYMENT BENEFITS. I Can”t look for work
anymore – unless I apply to a doctor. Which I have no experience at: I want
to work – but there is nothing…………………. I can’t more because I help
care for my 80 year old parents.

The reason they bailed out the “corporate greed” is because they are all shareholders and receive DIVIDENDS from those “greedy corporations”. I’ve always said 401K’s was nothing but a gimmick to get funding for greedy corporations. When they close, merge, sellout, or whatever, you end up getting a 10% penalty to use your own money if you do not roll it over into another 401K account! Go figure!
We are in between a rock and a hard place, penalized for using own money, and then penalized for being out of work. Funny thing is, you get neither a 401K, nor a unemployment check WITHOUT first working to earn the right to both of them should the need arise!!!

This is insane! I have never see such a blatant disregard for the American public as we are witnessing now. History will record this as one of biggest mistakes of 2010 Congress generating millions of foreclosures, repossessions and forcing citizens to be homeless and in soup lines. The economy will turn back down into the crapper. Congress is Destroying America and all we can do is watch.
Next year Mexico and Canada may have a problem keeping illegal Americans from flooding their country.
I say we vote out ALL incumbents and start with a fresh new batch of them that hopefully are not rich and despiteful of the American Public.
God help us all.
