Philadelphia, Pa (May 2) – The New York Mets were defeated by the Philadelphia Phillies by the score of 11-5. The Mets got off to a good start taking a 5-2 lead but then the Phillies exploded for eight runs in the fourth inning. Johan Santana who pitched great in April gave up 10 runs. He had allowed seven runs in five April starts.
Santana’s final line read 3 2/3 innings, eight hits, 10 runs. Santana also walked two and struck out one. Hisanori Takahashi, Fernando Nieve, Pedro Feliciano and Francisco Rodriguez combined to pitch 4 1/3 innings giving up one run on seven hits. It really unraveled for Santana when he had the bases loaded and walked the pitcher Jaime Moyer. Shane Victorino hit a grand slam after that and all of the sudden a 5-3 Mets lead was gone and it was 7-5 Phillies. Placido Polanco singled and Chase Utley hit a two run home run to make it 9-5 Phillies. Jerry Manuel and the Mets looked stunned as their ace got hit hard and it happened so quickly. The Mets after winning nine of ten games are limping out of Philadelphia with a little reality check. The Phillies reminded the Mets after they lost the first game to them that they are still the two time defending National League Champions.
The Mets only managed one baserunner after the fourth inning. That wasn’t good for the Mets as they were facing Jaime Moyer and the Phillies bullpen. The Mets will now head to Cincinatti to try and get back on track. The Mets last allowed 10 runs in back to back games was September of 2007 against the Nationals. That was during the swoon they were going through down the stretch of that season.
