H.R. 4213 Postponed | American Jobs and Closing Tax Loopholes Act

By: T. Cahill

Washington, D.C. (May 22) – According to sources, Friday, May 21, 2010, the House members decided to postpone addressing the issues of the amended text to H.R. 4213. The House has given itself a 72 hour window for “member review”. The amendment, known as the American Jobs and Closing Tax Loopholes Act should be decided on the House floor Monday. In fact, it is critical that this action take place.

The next step will be to pass it over to the Senate. The Senate will have only until next Friday to decide whether or not to extend unemployment benefits. However, the amendment to H.R. 4213 has numerous additional contexts including the continuation of tax breaks to the wealthy given back during previous administrations. Tax breaks for families and individuals, COBRA and other numerous items included in the amendment have deadlines which are rapidly approaching.

The decision to spend an additional 72 hours prior to bringing it to the floor for debate and voting came as a surprise. Sources in Washington were adamant on Thursday that the House would vote Friday May 21. With inclusions “very attractive” to both sides, it appeared to be a “shoe in” and quick pass to the Senate. Everyone involved is aware how critical the passage of the Tax Extenders Act is not only for millions of unemployed Americans facing the end of unemployment extensions, but additional ramifications are involved that should encourage new hiring and hopeful job growth.

Tick tock Congress.

But this will still not do any good for the 99er’s which I am one of. Worked for over 36 years, looking for more than 2 years. This is like we are all just going to go over the edge of a cliff in just a few short weeks. Anyone agree disagree???

agree jones8288, i too one of the 99ers (Cali)have exhausted all benefits. To those who continue to make negative comments, I have, still searching for work nearly 2 yrs. I have a file folder with a submission of 3100 jobs and nothing. I have sent applications outside of Cali, still nothing.Do I want to remain on UI, NO but when it’s the only source of income to keep me alive and support myself, YES. I am not abusing what I have paid into for over 30 yrs. What is not working Congress working on bills that have nothing to do with economy. Stay out of other countries business and get your own in order. Enforce the 287g laws, make companies accountable for continuing hiring undocumented workers and help AZ with it increase in crime. In Cali I see everyday workers in businesses that are not legal. Go to McDonald, no one is speaking ENGLISH behind the counter. You want to be here, speak the country LEGAL OFFICIAL language ENGLISH. As a pissed off 99ers and AMERICANS out of work, I see more undocumented workers receiving more help than I am by walking into the welfare office and walk out with food stamps etc and I have to beg for UI benefits I have paid into.

AGREE, as you searching for work over 2yrs, nothing. I’m feed up and sick of hearing as long as we continue to received benefits, it’s less likely we will look for work. NOT TRUE!!! I have, I am looking for work. Inside/outside of my home state of CALI. NOTHING!!! Until you are without work, without any source of income to survive, then maybe you will see how critical it is that unemployed AMERICANS need benefits. It’s sad that HR4213 will not help us. You would think after the phone calls, emails and the petition, they are listening. Who am I’m kidding? They didn’t listen before, why now. This playing tic for tac every 30 days is BS and they know it.

The bill does not address additional weeks of benefits, or another tier (Like Tier 5) That being said, this may be a step toward that goal for us 99′ers, although I question if this bill will even make it before the deadline on June 2nd, especially with all the Republican obstructionists who may block the bill next week. Like I said, it won’t help any of those who have exhausted all their benefits, but it will those have not, and it should be passed. Leaving possibly millions of unemployed Americans without any financial life line, especially those over 50, is unacceptable, and un-American IMHO.

Hi Teresa: Is this a good thing? I was wondering if our petition on the 99ner (add more weeks to unemployment extensions) might get included? Have not heard if the petition that went to Washington had made any kind of an impact on our issue.

there is not extra weeks for the 99ers but a continued tax break for the wealthy, that is outragious. I think it is time for all of them to go. If they are in office now then vote them out. how ever many elections cycles it takes to get them all gone. demacrats, republicans, independant. all of them must go! vote them out! in with the new. so make a note of who’s there now and bring that note with you on election day. thats what Im doing, I hope you all join me..

Sen Reid Office said they want to pass this HR4213 without Tier 5 included. Then they will try to think about getting another Tier 5 out if “possible”. I am not trying to be pessimistic but I doubt if Sen Reid office will do anything for us. Let’s hope they will reconsider our appeal after WorldNewsVine delivered a petition of the 99ers last Thursday. I would like to commend the service WorldNewVine have extended to the 99ers. We all appreciate what WorldNewsVine have done for us.

Thank you Chedar – Those seeking to provide action for the cause need to begin focusing their attentions on the republican party members in Congress.. as stated many times in the past, the Democratic Leadership needs to win the support of at least 4 republicans to turn this around… you must focus your energies and phone calls towards the GOP and convince them… the republicans are the responsible party for blocking help to America’s unemployed… try and focus this time people…

        Admin, All:

To get more votes, “the Democratic Leadership needs to win the support of at least 4 republicans to turn this around”. So we should make a short list of what republicans in the Congress and Senate are moderates, or have voted for the other side on issues. so here would be my contribution to the list of republicans to focus on.

        US Senator for Maine
        Olympia Snowe
Note: I think she is a best bet moderate, as she voted with democrats on Health Care and Financial reform bills.
I think she also voted for adding the last set of Tiers of unemployment benefits. According to the Wall Street Journal Unemployment is at 8.1% in her home state of Maine

        US Senator for Massachusetts
        Scott Brown
Note: I think he might be of interest to contact, because he does not always vote with his part. He is outspoken about the common man. As I recall, he voted with democrats on the Financial reform bills.According to the Wall Street Journal, unemployment is at 9.2% in his home state of Massachusetts.

        US Senate Minority Leader
        Mitch McConnell
        US Senator for Kentucky
Note: I think he might be of interest to contact, because he is the Republicans Minority Leader in the Senate, and logically would have sway over his party. According to the Wall Street Journal, unemployment is at 10.6% in his home state of Kentucky.

        Congressman for Ohio’s 8th District
        Minority Leader
Note: I think he might be of interest to contact, because he is the Republicans Minority Leader in Congress, and logically would have sway over his party. According to the Wall Street Journal, unemployment is at 10.9% in his home state of Ohio.

        US Senator for Nevada
        John Ensign
Note: I think he might be of interest to contact, because according to the Wall Street Journal, unemployment is at 13.7% in his home state of Nevada, one of the highest rates in the country.

        Congressman for Virginias 7th District
        Minority Whip
        Eric Cantor
Note: I think he might be of interest to contact, because he is the Republicans Minority Whip in Congress, and logically would have sway over his party. I have seen him often on CNN fighting the issues of the Democrats. If we could win him over, I think we could win over a lot of Republicans. According to the Wall Street Journal, unemployment is only 7.2% in his home state of Virginia.

In general, I think it would be worth putting energy into contacting republicans in states that have high rates of unemployment, like California, Nevada, Florida, Michigan, …

Would do you think? Can you ad to this list?

        Hope my contribution helps.

        Peter

Just concentrate on the Senate… the GOP in the Senate has been causing all the problems… the House still enjoys a majority of Democrats and can hold their own…. all these bills make it through the House and then some Senate Republican hoses up the works by objecting to the fact that the recession and unemployment regarding neither as an emergency… and in turn-about, won’t let TARP monies, repaid TARP monies to be used to offset the needs of America’s unemployed workforce…

Once again, to so many (not necessarily as a response to this poster) I would like to point out that we deal in fact here at WorldNewsVine and all this babble you are hearing around the net is just that, babble… there are those out there blaming the entire Congress which is so far from being the truth it is ridiculous… these people are feeding the fuel to the fire that will get this whole EUC program totally canned by turning around in November like the morons most are, and vote the GOP back into power which in turn, will halt all aid to the nation’s workforce… this simply because a majority refuse to either read, or simply cannot comprehend the facts… it is the GOP that is refusing to help America’s workforce, they voted in tax breaks to the rich that sent jobs overseas during the Bush administration, they voted to give their rich campaign contributors TARP monies to bail them out in turn those that failed this country did nothing more than take the TARP monies and give themselves large bonuses….

I am going to state this one more time IT IS THE GOP THAT IS OBJECTING TO ASSISTING THE NATIONS UNEMPLOYED, GET IT!!!

It’s hard to believe that there is anyone out there who does not see that the GOP (Good Old Party – nickname for REPUBLICAN PARTY) has disregarded the plight of American workers who are unemployed through NO FAULT OF THEIR OWN. For the past 25 years I am ashamed to say that I have been a registered REPUBLICAN. Month after month the Republican party has demonstrated that it does NOT represent me, you or the people. I will vote at election time and I will vote Democrat. I encourage all unemployed workers who the Republican party has failed over and over again to do the same. If every one of us makes one single commitment in our lifetime that we absolutely do follow through on it MUST be to GET OUT TO VOTE. We MUST send a CLEAR, VERY CLEAR MESSAGE to Republicans who are supposed to represent us that we do not want them if they cannot do their job. If Republicans choose not to represent us as American people created equal living in one nation under God then what good are they? We MUST send the Republican party a message that LIFE is NOT just a wealthy person’s perk. If we all vote for those who have demonstrated that we do matter – the Democrat party, then we absolutely will make a difference.

It is usless to contact the republican party. They are here to obstruct. They do not care about the millions of good working americans, who have lost their jobs because of wall street, the banks, etc. Like Matt says, lets throw the bums out. All of them. Make a list of who is in congress, and vote against them. I, like Matt will do just that…

Well we need to continue to press on — Minority Leader Mitch McConnell should be the one that everyone keeps calling and reminding that there are many out there without jobs, many more underemployed. and millions going without, completely without that need assistance right now…. start calling and asking them what they want you to do if they will not help with any further assistance… let them know election time is right around the corner… it’s the GOP that needs to be convinced to change their minds on all of this… help the Democratic Leadership out by phoning all available Senate Republicans until they finally crack like a nut….

I think President Obama should tell these bozo’s if you can’t get your act together and have on my desk by Friday H.R. 4214 along with an amendment or another bill that address’ the 99ers and does not continue tax breaks for the rich, then the break is canceled until you do! If you have no intention of helping the long term unemployed then let them know that also. Then we would at least have the opportunity to find the ones who go to their million dollar vacation homes and ask them why everyone in the world are more important than the people they are supposed to be representing. I have sent letters to the president, Sen. Baucas, Sen. Kyl, Sen. McCain, and my resume’ has gone to the a fore mentioned and about twenty more. Why don’t you make BP hire all the 99ers @ about $60/HR + Per Diem to clean up the entire gulf of Mexico they have ruined! No I’m sorry, I’m sure we will cut them a check when all this is said and done. I have a message for you on Capitol Hill we are tired of being ignored and being treated as second class citizens, and we are tired of not having representation in Washington. What I have seen is that you have turned your back on the 99ers which to me means you will also turn your back on me and every other American that someday may need a helping hand. I have proposed ways of paying for a “tier V” but have yet to hear a response. I did get a form letter back from Sen. Kyl, about the Fed audit which was strange because in the letter I sent I did not mention the Fed audit one single time!

      So in agreement with Shannon
Why should they take a break/time off and have not accomplished anything. In the real world (business), if you have not completed everything on your table/plate, all vacation is suspended

Good idea Shannon! I had actually already e-mailed Senator Reid about this and have now e-mailed the White House as well. I’ve said this several times before, but I’ll say it again here … when I had a job, if I went on vacation and left something as major as this undone, I would have been fired. They do not need to take their holiday/break/vacation until this bill has been passed by both Chambers and the President has signed it.

@ Shannon jones yeah I was thinking the same thing, like because it’s postponed it gives our petition more time to be looked over/thought about/included etc. But it’s looking real bleek for us. And I also realized it went from “there’s not going to be a tier 5″ to “there’s no tier 5″ to “tier 5 doesn’t exist” to pretty much saying “they never heard of the word tier and is 5 a number?” lol these blogs are crazy, but much respect to WNV thanks for the support. To everyone else keep ya head up.

Keep calling Mitch McConnell’s office until he cracks… it’s the GOP that needs to be gotten to… If at least 4 GOP Senators could be convinced to side with America’s unemployed workforce, that would be enough to at least invoke cloture on any measure that could be brought to the Senate floor…. after that and debates and more babble from the party of “No” and those Senators still siding with the unemployed then, something could be done…. listening to these people rant and rave about “all” of congress needing to go, it my eyes makes it somewhat obvious that if they have so much free time on their hands a course or to in politics at their local community college would be in order… not only are they unemployed but creating chaos by virtue of the fact they are being misinformed and lack the knowledge of how, the US government or at least the Congressional body of the government works….

Call, call, cal the Senate Republicans… don’t let upl… the GOP will need to hear from you folks, ask them if they are unwilling to help with additional assistance what are they recommending those that have exhausted their benefits are to do….

I think the reality is that Obongo doesn’t care about any of us…he’s proven that over & over again. My benefits ran out in March, I don’t expect any new tier. I think that’s the cold hard reality of it. It’s all about politics & re-election in Nov. The general public (with jobs) think that 99 weeks is enough…everyone is tired of hearing about us. This is just my reality but I’m still fighting & hoping.

    Al,

There was an interview with Republican US Senator from NH Judd Greg on CNBC yesterday. In it he stated he wants Extended Unemployment Benefits to come to an end now (It can be viewed on YouTube).

It was disappointing, because he was not asked in the interview to respond to the numbers; for instance the current number of people that are unemployed and how long it will take for them to become re-employed at the current rate of job growth (best and worst case). In addition, he should have been asked just what those out of work should do in the meantime, as they wait to be re-employed, suffering without receiving Extended Unemployment Benefits.

Note that I have emailed Senator Greg twice now, asking these questions, and he has yet to get back to me. I think a good strategy to confront the GOP on the issue of continued Extended Unemployment Benefit legislation, is to ask them to respond to the above questions. Don’t le them off the hook!

Note, Judd Senator Greg is an outgoing Senator, who is not running for re-election, and I think this is the reason he is being so thoughtlessly vocal for his party’s view (GOP), as he has nothing to lose.

It’s crunch time for putting Americans back to work. Members of Congress often talk about jobs: Now they have a chance to back up their rhetoric with action.

This week Congress intends to vote on a jobs bill that cracks down on tax loopholes for millionaire hedge fund managers and on corporations that ship our jobs overseas. This jobs bill will put Americans back to work by repairing our crumbling infrastructure; stemming public sector layoffs in the states; encouraging more bank loans to small business; extending unemployment benefits and health benefits for the unemployed through the end of this year; and providing over 300,000 summer jobs for unemployed youth.

If you’re not for this bill, you’re not for jobs. Period.

And please, no more excuses about the budget deficit—unless and until you’re willing to make Wall Street pay its fair share to bring down the deficit. The people who are always saying “no” to jobs because of the deficit are often the same people who voted to squander our hard-earned
budget surpluses so they could shower undeserved tax breaks on rich people during the Bush years. Apparently, spending money on rich people is perfectly okay, but investing in jobs for working class Americans sets off alarm bells
