Yankees Take Series in Boston with 3-1 Victory in Extra Inning

Boston, MA (Apr 7) – The New York Yankees and Boston Red Sox were locked in a tight battle all night however, the Yankees prevailed in the 10th inning winning the game 3-1.

Andy Pettitte pitched well but early on he had a lot of runners on base but was able to escape the innings, relatively unscathed.  His performance improved as the game went on even after the Red Sox took an early 1-0 lead.

Lackey pitched 6 shutout innings giving up 3 hits.  Daniel Bard came on in the 7th inning and mowed the Yankees right down.  The game was tied in the 8th inning when Jorge Posada hit a double off of the wall and Nick Swisher hit an RBI single.  Jorge Posada did not look good running from second to home.  Posada looked really slow almost like he was jogging and then tried to tiptoe around the catcher to get to home plate.  If the throw was good he would have been out but instead he fell to the ground and was able to get back and touch home plate as the throw bounced away.

Mariano Rivera closed out the game in the bottom of the 10th with a perfect inning.  He has looked great in these last 2 games that he has saved, looking as good as ever.  When you see him pitch you wonder if he will ever lose it as he is now in his 40′s, he is truly a guy you appreciate as you realize more and more he is once in a lifetime kind of player.

Curtis Granderson was the hero of the game as he had the game winning homerun off of Red Sox closer Jonathan Papelbon.

The Yankees added an insurance run when Mark Teixeira hit into a FC with the bases loaded to give the Yankees the 3-1 lead.  Chan Ho Park really could have been the player of the game though as he came back from his poor opening night outing and had 3 scoreless innings.  He looked very impressive tonight, it was surprising that he was out there that long but he gave the rest of the bullpen a rest and it worked out well for the Yankees.

Curtis Granderson had a great opening series as a Yankee with 2 homeruns and he finished the night 2-4.  Andy Pettitte easily had the best start of the 3 starters.  He pitched 6 innings giving up 6 hits with 3 walks and 4 strikeouts.  The Yankees will have an off day before taking on the Tampa Bay Rays in a 3 game set at Tropicana Field in St. Petersburg over the weekend.

The Yankees will play their home opener on Tuesday afternoon.
