KABUL, Afghanistan (March 13) – In separate operations yesterday joint security teams engaged eight militants killing three and wounding another, captured a Taliban sub-Commander, and detained several others.

Over the past 24 hours a joint Afghan-international force in Spin Boldak district of Kandahar Province, seized over 800 kilograms of hashish on a trailer of a broken tractor. Led by Afghan National Police officers, the patrol discovered, seized, and transferred the narcotics to a nearby ANP compound.

Afghanistan National Security Forces with International Security and Assistance Force partners captured two Taliban insurgents south of Gheysarakeh village, Kajaki, Helmand. One of the captured men is suspected of being a Taliban commander involved with the facilitation of IED components and the planning of Taliban attacks.

Operation Moshtarak remains on track as the combined force continues to make progress. Activities continue in much the same manner as reported over the last 48 hours, with route clearance operations improving freedom of movement. There are reports from both Nad-e Ali and Marjeh of IED strikes, weapon finds and some small-arms engagements. In Marjeh, determined resistance is again reported in some areas. The Regional Command-South commander believes the clearing phase is progressing well and will take at least 30 days to complete.

The military phase of Operation Moshtarak remains on track. The insurgents are tactically adept, have resilience and are cunning, so continued tactical patience on the part of the combined force is important. Mining is significant in areas, and the combined force must be very deliberate in its movement in order to minimize local Afghan and combined force casualties.
