Alhaji Mamuda Aliyu Shinkafi, former governor and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) candidate in the 2015 governorship election in Zamfara state, North West Nigeria, has accused the Independent National Electoral Commission of fraudulently announcing the All Progressives Congress candidate (APC), Abdulazeez Yari, as the winner of the gubernatorial election.
He made this accusation in an interview with the press on Sunday 12 March 2015, in his residence in Gusau, the state capital. He accused police officers attached to the Government house of hijacking the electoral materials and manipulating the figures.
He said the protest that erupted after the announcement was spontaneous as the residents of the state were angry that the result released at the various polling units was different from what was announced at the collation centers.
Shinkafi, said the inhuman treatment and brutalization of the citizenry by the police was a violation of the citizens’ rights to protest. He appealed to the protesters to embrace peace and that he will make sure that justice prevails in the state.
Shimkafi wondered why police men attached to the government house would allow themselves to be used to circumvent the wishes of the people of Zamfara state.
The police teargased and horse whipped the protesters leaving some of them with injuries.
Mamuda Aliyu Shinkafi said he would challenge the Zamfara state gubernatorial polls result in court.
