Las Vegas, NV (Sept) The Cellular Telecommunications Industry Association (CTIA), brought to you by Super Mobility Week, held its convention in Las Vegas, NV from September 9-11, 2014 at the Sands Expo and Convention Center. The Wireless Association® is an international nonprofit membership organization that has represented the wireless communications industry since 1984 and is based in Washington, DC. Membership in the association includes wireless carriers and their suppliers, providers, and manufacturers of wireless data services and products. CTIA also supports numerous important industry initiatives such as ,“On the Road, Off the Phone,” a teen-focused safe driving public announcement campaign, among many others.
The first day keynote speakers, led by CTIA President & CEO Meredith Attwell Baker, included Tom Wheeler, Chairman, Federal Communications Commission, with the message that the industry has evolved a great deal. From a luxury service used for phone calls to a must-have service used for just about everything; texting your friends, emailing your office, taking pictures, sharing pictures, watching video, listening to music, tracking news, getting directions and, yes, you can still make a phone call. Chairman Wheeler highlighted three topics: competition, net neutrality, and incentive auction. “Where competition exists, the Commission will protect it, and the absence of meaningful competition invites government regulation.” And, “competition does not assure openness.” He continued, “Consumers increasingly rely on mobile broadband as an important pathway to access the internet.” He’s speaking of spectrum, something that can’t be seen but is considered a great public asset. More mobile broadband spectrum has been requested and Congress responded with an incentive auction to simultaneously buy broadcast services, reband it and the remaining broadcast frequencies, and auction the results. Chairman Wheeler explained, “when the Broadcast Incentive Auction is a success, it will be the template for multiple other incentive auctions to follow.” A wireless phone is a very sophisticated and versatile radio similar to a walkie-talkie. A cell phone receives and sends radio waves. Those radio waves, traveling through spectrum, are used to transmit voice calls and data to your mobile device anywhere, anytime.
Industry professionals attended the largest mobile event in North America, and over eleven hundred exhibitors were on the showroom floor or at one of the special events hosted by Pepcom Mobile Focus or ShowStoppers®, demonstrating the newest innovations.
