Nick Shepherd keynote – The Re-Imaging of a Brand
Out of the top 100 bar clubs in America, Las Vegas houses 4 of the top 5 this year. So it’s fitting that the 28th edition of the Nightclub and Bar Convention & Trade Show began on March 19, 2013 for three days in Las Vegas, Nevada.
One of the three keynote speakers this year was T.G.I. Friday’s CEO, Nick Shepherd. Because this is now a global company in 60 countries, he is reimaging the restaurants and presented three key ways he is accomplishing this.
Make your bartenders heroes was one of the ways and in his restaurants they must “show” their customers how to have a good time. They have to be experts in recipes as well as be able to engage people since success is all about relationships with people. He looks for and hires the greatest bartenders who express pride, passion and personality while engaging with their guests.
Shepherd’s re-imaging of restaurants includes making his Friday’s restaurants fit in the community by making the place look and feel local with neighborhood food, beverages and games. But most important of all is the hiring of great people. Without that piece, everything dies. Shepherd quoted that 60% of all bars fail every year so in order to survive in the business, he feels great bartenders are the most essential. One way he finds them is by hosting the T.G.I. Friday’s World Bartenders Championship Competition. It’s Shepherd’s way to find and recognize great bartenders.
