Yankees lose once again on a walk-off

By Gary W. Marchese Jr.

Toronto, Canada (Sept 16) – The New York Yankees were defeated by the Toronto Blue Jays by the score of 5-4 on Friday night. CC Sabathia made the start and he labored, it was the third straight start where he was not his usual self. The bullpen was good for a couple of innings and then they lost the game in the ninth inning. The Yankees offense was quiet after the first few innings. Eric Chavez and Nick Swisher had big games offensively.

Sabathia pitched 5 2/3 innings giving up four runs on 10 hits. He walked four and struck out eight. Luis Ayala retired the only batter he faced, Rafael Soriano pitched a perfect inning striking out the sides and Dave Robertson pitched an inning giving up a hit, walking two and striking out one. Boone Logan took the loss dropping his record to 5-3. Logan pitched 1/3 of an inning giving up a hit, a run and a walk. Cory Wade gave up a hit without recording an out and for the second game in a row gave up the walk-off hit. This time it was a single by Jose Molina.

Robinson Cano had two hits, Nick Swisher had two hits and two RBI and Eric Chavez had a hit and two RBI. Curtis Granderson and Brett Gardner each had a walk. Swisher and Cano each had a double. Chavez had a homerun. The Yankees were 2-3 with runners in scoring position and they left two men on base. Gardner had two stolen bases.

The Blue Jays took a 1-0 lead in the first inning. Edwin Encarnacion grounded into a force out and a run scored. In the fourth inning, Swisher hit an RBI double and Chavez hit a two-run homerun to give the Yankees a 3-1 lead. In the bottom of the fifth, Adam Lind had a big hit, a three run double to give the Jays a 4-3 lead. In the sixth inning, Swisher hit an RBI single to tie the game at four. The Jays won the game in the bottom of the ninth on an RBI single by Jose Molina.

The Yankees are now 3-4 on their current nine game road trip. The Yankees have a very tough schedule to end the season but they are hanging in there. They need to win at least one of the last two games of the series. The Yankees have a 3 ½ game lead over the Boston Red Sox for first place in the East. The Yankees after finishing this series will head home for their final home stand of the season. The Yankees will play a makeup game against the Twins, four against the Rays and three against the Red Sox before finishing the season on the road.

The Yankees record dropped to 90-59, they have a magic number to clinch a playoff spot of six. Everyone loved about this team has been sapped away. It is a shame but they are headed in the right direction and Collins will have them playing hard the rest of the way otherwise they will not be playing at all. The Nationals took over third place and dropped the Mets to fourth place in the NL East.
