The Yankees lose a one run game again in extra innings to the Orioles

By Gary W. Marchese Jr.

Baltimore, MD (Sept 9) – The New York Yankees lost to the Baltimore Orioles by the score of 5-4 on Thursday afternoon. Ivan Nova started and had his shortest outing in about a month. Nova did not pitch very well at all; it was just a blip on a successful season for the young right-hander. The offense did a lot early and then for the last six innings did nothing. There has to be some credit given to the Baltimore bullpen, they were outstanding in this game.

Nova pitched 5 1/3 innings giving up five hits and three runs with three walks and two strikeouts. Boone Logan gave up a hit without recording an out, Luis Ayala pitched 2/3 of an inning retiring both batters he faced and Aaron Laffey walked the only batter that he faced. Cory Wade pitched an inning giving up a hit and striking out one, Rafael Soriano pitched an inning giving up three hits and one run and Scott Proctor took the loss giving up three hits and one run in 1 1/3 innings. He walked two and struck out one.

Derek Jeter had a hit, two RBI, a walk, Curtis Granderson had a walk, and Mark Teixeira had two hits. Alex Rodriguez had two walks, Robinson Cano had a hit and Nick Swisher had two walks. Eric Chavez had two hits and two RBI and Brett Gardner had a walk. The Yankees were 3-8 with runners in scoring position and they left seven men on base. Teixeira had a stolen base and Jeter was caught stealing. Cervelli and Gardner each made an error. Granderson had an outfield assist.

In the second inning, Chavez had an RBI single and Jeter had a two run single to give the Yankees a 3-0 lead. In the bottom of the second, Vladimir Guerrero hit a solo homerun to make it a 3-1 game. In the third inning, Chavez had an RBI single to make it 4-1 Yankees. Mark Reynolds had an RBI groundout in the bottom of the fourth and the score was 4-2 Yankees. In the sixth inning Chris Davis had an RBI double to make it a 4-3 game. Robert Andino had an RBI single in the eighth to tie the score at four. Andino had an RBI single in the tenth to give the Orioles the walk-off 5-4 victory.

The Yankees and Orioles played four games in a row but this was just a one game series in Baltimore. The Orioles also won on Wednesday afternoon in New York after losing the first two in New York. The Yankees will now head to Anaheim to begin a two city six game west coast swing to be followed with a trip to Toronto. It is going to be a difficult trip for the Yankees, as they will be facing four of the top pitchers in the league over the next four games. The Yankees remain 2 ½ games ahead of the Boston Red Sox in the AL East. The Red Sox also lost their game on Thursday night. This was the first time in a long time the Yankees lost a game that Nova started; Nova has been so good this rookie season of his but not today. The Yankees will look to bounce back against the Angels on Friday night with Bartolo Colon on the mound, against Jered Weaver.
