Nova wins his 15th as the Yankees scrape by the Jays

Bronx, NY (Sept 3) – The New York Yankees defeated the Toronto Blue Jays by the score of 3-2 on Friday night. Ivan Nova made the start and got off to a rough start but then settled in and was able to pick up the victory. The bullpen did its usual good job; Brett Gardner led the offense with a two-run homerun. The lineup was missing Alex Rodriguez and Mark Teixeira leaving the offense with just enough to win the game.

Nova pitched seven innings giving up two runs on three hits. He walked two and struck out four. Nova improved his record to 15-4 on the season. Rafael Soriano pitched a scoreless inning giving up a hit and striking out one and Mariano Rivera picked up his 37th save of the season pitching a perfect inning with a strikeout.

Gardner had a hit and two RBI; he also made a couple of good defensive plays. Derek Jeter had a hit, Curtis Granderson had a walk and Robinson Cano had a hit, RBI and a walk. Eric Chavez had a walk, Andruw Jones had a hit and Russell Martin had a walk. Gardner had a homerun, the Yankees were 1-6 with runners in scoring position and they left eight men on base. Jeter and Gardner each had a stolen base and Jeter made an error. Gardner had an outfield assist.

The Blue Jays got on the board first with two runs in the first inning. Nova had a rough first inning and was bailed out be a very good defensive play by Gardner, he settled down after that. Jose Bautista had an RBI single and Adam Lind hit a sacrifice fly to make it 2-0. The Yankees would tie the game in the third inning on a two-run homerun by Gardner. The Yankees would take a 3-2 lead in the fifth inning on a Cano RBI single. The scoring would end there as both bullpens did a good job.

The Yankees won the first of three against the Blue Jays. The Yankees just came off of a seven game road trip where they won four out of seven. The Yankees with the win moved into first place in the AL East. The Red Sox lost so they moved ½ game ahead of them. The Yankees and Red Sox will meet for one more series in the Bronx. The Yankees will send Bartolo Colon to the mound on Saturday afternoon against Ricky Romero.
