Yankees win a nail biter in Chicago

By Gary W. Marchese Jr.

Chicago, IL (Aug 2) – The New York Yankees defeated the Chicago White Sox by the score of 3-2 on Monday night. CC Sabathia made the start and did what he usually does which is, pitched well. The offense started well and then cooled down but it was enough for them to win the game. The Yankees were playing without their captain Derek Jeter but it is expected that he would only miss the one game. The Yankees with the win moved to their high water mark of the season, 23 games over 500.

Sabathia pitched eight innings giving up ten hits and two runs, no walks, and struck out six. Sabathia is now 16-5 with a 2.55 ERA. Mariano Rivera pitched a perfect inning picking up his 28th save of the season. He did strike out a batter.

Brett Gardner had a hit, Curtis Granderson had two hits and an RBI and Mark Teixeira had two hits. Robinson Cano had a hit and an RBI, Eric Chavez had a hit and Jorge Posada had a hit. Andruw Jones had a walk and Eduardo Nunez had a walk, Granderson had two doubles. The Yankees were 2-7 with runners in scoring position and they left five men on base.

The Yankees scored two runs in the first inning. Gardner singled and Granderson had an RBI double. Cano had an RBI single. The Yankees extended the lead to 3-0 by Cano grounding into a double play. In the fourth inning, Alexei Ramirez hit a two run homerun to cut the lead to 3-2 and that is how the game would stay.

It was not as easy as it has been for Sabathia. He did not dominate on this night but he did what he does best which is winning the game. The Yankees moved to a season best 23 games over 500 placing them only one game back of the Boston Red Sox for first place in the AL East. The two teams will play a three game series this weekend in Fenway Park.

The Yankees are leading the wild card chase. The Yankees have won seven of their last nine games. Sabathia leads the majors with 16 wins and is 9-1 since June 14th. The homerun that Sabathia gave up was only the seventh this season he has given up. The White Sox threatened in the fifth, sixth and seventh innings but the Yankees ace was able to get out of trouble each time.
