Yankees sweep the White Sox

By Gary W. Marchese Jr.

Chicago, IL (Aug 5) – The New York Yankees defeated the Chicago White Sox by the score of 7-1 on Thursday night. Ivan Nova made the start and was brilliant once again. Nova and Phil Hughes have been competing for a rotation spot and neither of them has done anything to lose their current position.

Hughes last start was by far his best and the Yankees announced he would pitch on Tuesday. Nova cannot be taken out of the rotation the way he pitched in this game. The offense continues to score runs even without Alex Rodriguez. Robinson Cano has been on fire as of late and Derek Jeter since coming off the disabled list is hitting very well.

Nova pitched 7 2/3 innings giving up six hits and one run. He did not walk a batter and struck out ten was awarded the win, and is now 10-4 on the season with a 3.81 ERA. Dave Robertson pitched to one batter and got him out, Hector Noesi pitched one inning giving up one hit and one run, and he struck out one batter.

Brett Gardner had one hit, Jeter had a walk and Curtis Granderson had an RBI. Cano had two hits and RBI, a walk, Nick Swisher had a hit, and a walk and Eric Chavez had a couple of hits. Jorge Posada had a hit and an RBI and Russell Martin had a hit and four RBI. Gardner had a double, Cano and Martin had homeruns. The Yankees were 2-7 with runners in scoring position and they left four men on base. Jeter and Nunez each had a stolen base.

Cano hit a solo homerun in the second inning to give the Yankees a 1-0 lead. The White Sox tied the game in the bottom of the third on a Juan Pierre sacrifice fly. In the sixth Gardner doubled, Jeter had a sacrifice bunt moving him to third and Granderson had an RBI groundout to give the Yankees a 2-1 lead which they would not relinquish. Posada had an RBI single in the seventh and Martin had a sacrifice fly making it 4-1. The scoring was capped with a Martin three run homerun in the ninth inning.

The Yankees swept the four game series and moved into a first place tie with the Boston Red Sox. The Yankees and Red Sox will play the first of three at Fenway Park on Friday night. Bartolo Colon will go up against Jon Lester in the series opener. The Yankees will enter the series 1-8 against the Red Sox so they have some making up to do in the head-to-head department. The Yankees have been on a roll of late winning seven straight games. The Yankees and Red Sox also have the best record in the American league and it is not even close. The loser of the divisional race will end up being the wild card winner unless they collapse.
