The Yankees roll to a victory in Chicago

By Gary W. Marchese Jr.

Chicago, IL (Aug 4) – The New York Yankees defeated the Chicago White Sox by the score of 18-7 on Wednesday night. A.J. Burnett made the start and did not have anything. He could not even pick up the win after being staked to a 13-1 lead. The offense saved the day as they pounded the ball all over the park. There were many heroes, as everyone in the lineup had at least one hit and scored at least one run. Derek Jeter had the best game along with, Eric Chavez and Curtis Granderson right behind him.

Burnett pitched 4 2/3 innings giving up seven runs on 13 hits, no walks, and struck out three. Burnett broke up the streak of five quality starts in a row from the bullpen. Cory Wade pitched 1 2/3 perfect innings. Wade got the win, which was the second of the year. Luis Ayala pitched two innings giving up one hit and Rafael Soriano pitched a perfect inning with a strikeout.

Brett Gardner had three hits, Jeter had five and two RBI and Granderson had four hits and five RBI. Mark Teixeira had one hit and three RBI, Robinson Cano had three hits and four RBI and Andruw Jones had a hit. Nick Swisher had a hit, a walk, Eric Chavez had three hits, and four RBI and Jorge Posada had a hit. Russell Martin had a hit and a walk. Posada, Jeter, Martin and Granderson all had a double. Granderson and Teixeira each had a triple. Cano and Chavez had a homerun, for Chavez it was his first homerun as a Yankee.

The Yankees were 11-16 with runners in scoring position and they left seven men on base. Gardner had a stolen base. The Yankees got started right from the start. In the first inning they took a 4-0 lead. Teixeira had a sacrifice fly and Cano hit a three-run homerun. The White Sox got a run in the bottom of the first inning on a Carlos Quentin sacrifice fly. In the second inning, Granderson had a two-run triple making it 6-1 Yankees.

Chavez had a two run homerun in the third inning making it 8-1, Jeter had a two run single to make it 10-1 and Teixeira had a two run triple making it 12-1 and the rout was on. The Yankees would add one more run in the inning on a Cano RBI single. In the fourth, the White Sox started a comeback. Brent Morel had an RBI single, Juan Pierre had an RBI single and Quentin had a three-run homerun. It was 13-6 Yankees. In the fifth inning A.J. Pierzynski had an RBI double to cut the lead to 13-7.

The Yankees added four more runs in the seventh to make it 17-7. The last run of the game came on a Granderson RBI double in the eighth inning.

The Yankees have won six games in a row and the first three of this four game series. The Yankees remain one game back in the AL East as the Red Sox won again also. They will play in Chicago on Thursday night and then head to Boston for a three game weekend series. Ivan Nova will make the start on Thursday; Phil Hughes had a great start on Tuesday night and will get another chance on Tuesday.

The Yankees are not sure what they will do with Nova, if he pitches well he may get another shot, if not he may head back down to AAA. It is an amazing run the Yankees offense is on especially without Alex Rodriguez. They have been averaging just about 10 runs per game over this stretch. The Yankees are a season high 25 games over 500 at 67-42. They continue to lead the wild card chase while still chasing down a division title.
