London (Aug 9) – Violence erupted in North London after a man was shot dead by the police. Mark Duggan, 29, is reported to have fired a gun at police from the passenger seat of a taxi, one officer was injured, and a second later found a bullet lodged in his radio. The death of Duggan led to a vigil outside Tottenham police station, with locals demanding justice for the family of the man many believe would not have carried out the crime he is accused of. An illegal gun was recovered from the scene.
Violence began not long after the peaceful march, with bottles being thrown at the police. Cars were set alight and the riot police and mounted division were called in. The fire brigade was called in to deal with dozens of fires started by the rioters. Petrol bombs were thrown into shops before the looting started.
According to reports, an industrial estate was the focus of the looters with the gangs moving from shop to shop, filling bags and boxes with everything, they could get their hands on from TVs to phones. Women even had time to try shoes on before stealing them. The looters were permitted to loot for close to 10 hours according to some reports.
After hours of rioting and looting in the Tottenham area, the mobs moved around the city with small groups of mobile looters moving around North South and East London.
There have been over 100 arrests by the time I switched off the rolling “breaking news” footage. Some of the rioters and looters crossed the line and invaded houses. Sadly those people were only arrested and not shot dead, but there is still time. Those people are not getting into the spirit of the thing.
The images are shocking, a raging river of anger is running through many parts of London, and many will understand why, while some never will. Nevertheless, when the Prime Minister does not see the need to cut short his holiday to run the country, then why should the people of North London worry about what they are doing? Cameron and Clegg have both spoke out about the rioting and looting, but when they are not in the country who gives a damn about what comes out of their filthy little mouths?
