Yankees lose first of four to Baltimore

By Gary W. Marchese Jr.

Bronx, NY (July 30) – The New York Yankees lost to the Baltimore Orioles by the score of 4-2 on Friday night. A.J. Burnett made the start and he was both good and bad, which is what makes him so frustrating. He had good stuff and dominated at times but then he also gave up big hits also. The offense was nowhere to be found. The Yankees did make some noise in the ninth inning but it was too late and they were unable to get the big hit to tie it up or win it.

Burnett pitched eight innings giving up four runs on five hits. He struck out ten and walked two. The ten strikeouts were a season high for him. Burnett saw his record drop to 8-9 and his ERA is at 4.23. Luis Ayala pitched an inning giving up no runs on two hits. He did strike out one batter. Jeremy Guthrie pitched seven innings giving up one run on four hits. He walked three and struck out five. Guthrie usually struggles with the Yankees but not in this game as he picked up his fifth win of the season.

Derek Jeter had a hit, Mark Teixeira had a hit and an RBI and Robinson Cano had a hit and a walk. Nick Swisher had a hit, RBI, a walk, Jorge Posada had two hits and two walks, and Russell Martin had one hit. Martin made a big out in the ninth inning in the middle of a rally. Cano and Swisher each had a double and Teixeira had a homerun. The Yankees were 1-9 with runners in scoring position and they left eight men on base.

Mark Reynolds hit a two run homerun in the second inning to give the Orioles a 2-0 lead. In the fourth inning Derrek Lee hit an RBI double to make it 3-0 Orioles. Lee hit a solo homerun in the sixth to make it 4-0 Orioles. The Yankees finally got on the board in the bottom of the sixth inning on a Teixeira solo homerun. In the ninth, the Yankees got a double from Cano followed by an RBI double by Swisher. The Yankees had runners on first and second one out and could not do any more damage though.

Burnett ended July without getting a win. The Yankees are 2 ½ games behind the Boston Red Sox for first place in the AL East. They are five games ahead of the Anaheim Angels for the wild card. Guthrie got his first victory at the new stadium in four starts. Teixeira now has the team lead in homeruns and is two behind the league leader Jose Bautista. The two teams will play a split double header on Saturday and finish their series on Sunday. The Yankees are currently 4-3 on their 10 game home stand.
