By Gary W. Marchese Jr.

Bronx, NY (July 1) – The New York Yankees defeated the Milwaukee Brewers by the score of 5-0 on Thursday afternoon. They completed the three game sweep. C.C. Sabathia made the start and was simply dominant. The Brewers did not stand a chance.

Mark Teixeira hit his league leading 25th homerun and Francisco Cervelli had a couple of RBI. The Yankees had a good home stand winning five out of six games. They were struggling at home early on but have turned that around and are on a roll at home now.

Sabathia pitched 7 2/3 innings giving up no runs on six hits. He walked two and struck out 13. He improved his record to 11-4 on the season and has a 3.05 ERA. Boone Logan struck out the only batter that he faced and Luis Ayala pitched a perfect inning.

Brett Gardner had a walk, Nick Swisher had a hit and a walk and Teixeira had a hit and an RBI. Robinson Cano had a hit and two RBI, Jorge Posada had a hit and Andruw Jones had a hit and a walk. Cervelli had three hits and two RBI. Cano had a double and Teixeira hit the only homerun. The Yankees were 3-11 with runners in scoring position and they left seven men on base. Swisher and Dickerson had a stolen base and Gardner had two.

In the first inning, Gardner, Swisher walked, and Cano hit a two run double to give the Yankees all they would need on this day. In the third inning, Teixeira hit a solo homerun and Cervelli had an RBI single. The Yankees had a 4-0 lead. The Yankees would score the last run of the game in the eighth inning on another Cervelli RBI single. The Yankees won the game 5-0.

Sabathia tied a career high with 13 strikeouts. He said this about-facing his former team “I was pretty nervous, I didn’t think I would be. That was my team, and that was a special moment I had with them in 2008.” Joe Girardi the Yankees manager said, “He’s got a lot of close friends on that team. CC could spend a week on a team, and you’d fall in love with his personality. That’s the type of guy he is. I’m sure it’s always fun to face your old teammates.” Sabathia had the most strikeouts for a Yankees pitcher since Roger Clemens on June 3, 2002. Sabathia has a share of the major league lead with 11 wins and the Yankees have now won 15 of their last 19 games.

The homerun that Teixeira hit was the 300th of his career. The Yankees remain 2 ½ games ahead of the Boston Red Sox who salvaged a win in their three game series with Philadelphia. The Yankees will now head to Citi Field for the second installment of the Subway Series. The Mets are coming into it playing good baseball also. They won four out of six on their road trip to Texas and Detroit, two first place teams. The Yankees will be getting Bartolo Colon back on Saturday. Ivan Nova and Freddy Garcia will make the other starts. Jon Niese will start for the Mets on Friday night, he is coming back from an irregular heartbeat.
