By Gary W. Marchese Jr.

Flushing, NY (July 17) – The New York Mets defeated the Philadelphia Phillies by the score of 11-2 on Saturday evening. Jon Niese made the start and was impressive. Niese continues to grow as a pitcher and is getting better and better. Niese has the chance to be a very good pitcher in the league. The Mets offense battered Cole Hamels and they did it without Jose Reyes, David Wright, Ike Davis and Carlos Beltran. Scott Hairston had a career day with five RBI.

Niese pitched seven innings giving up six hits and two runs. He only gave up one earned run, one walk and had six strikeouts. He is now 9-7 with a 3.73 ERA. Bobby Parnell pitched an inning giving up a walk, he struck out two batters, Manny Acosta pitched an inning giving up a hit, and he struck out one batter. Hamels gave up eight hits and seven runs in 4 1/3 innings.

Hairston had two doubles and Duda had a double. Murphy and Hairston each had a homerun. The Mets were 6-10 with runners in scoring position and they left nine men on base. Bay had a stolen base and Tejada had two errors.

Murphy had an RBI single in the first inning to give the Mets a 1-0 lead. In the third Hairston had a two run double to make it 3-0. Pagan had a sacrifice fly in the fourth inning to make it 4-0 Mets. In the fifth Murphy had a solo homerun, Evans had an RBI triple and Tejada had an RBI single. In the seventh inning the Phillies finally got on the board. They scored their two runs and they were on an error and a double play. Turner had an RBI single and Hairston had a three-run homerun in the seventh to make it 11-2 Mets. That would be all the scoring in the game, thankfully for the Phillies as they endured one of their worst losses.

The Mets and Phillies have split the first two of the three game series. The Mets will try and win the series on Sunday. The Mets record is 47-46 and the Phillies are 58-35. The Phillies continue to lead the NL East and the Mets continue to hang on the periphery of the wild card race, they did pick up a game on the Braves who lost on Saturday.
