CC comes though again

By Gary W. Marchese Jr.

Toronto (July 17) – The New York Yankees defeated the Toronto Blue Jays on Saturday afternoon by the score of 4-1. CC Sabathia started for the Yankees and after two rough days in Toronto, he stabilized things for the Yankees. Sabathia has been on some run, he has now won 7 straight starts and 11 of his last 12. He has the most wins in the majors and he gave the Yankees just what they needed.

The Yankees offense was not great today but they did enough to win the game. Brett Gardner had a big game with three hits including two doubles. Derek Jeter also had two hits to tie for 26th on the all-time hits list.

Sabathia pitched eight innings giving up three hits and one run. He walked three and struck out eight, the one run he gave up came in the first inning and then he dominated the rest of the game. Mariano Rivera pitched the ninth inning for his 23rd save of the season. He did give up a couple of singles but was able to get out of the jam. The Yankees pitchers got hit around a bit in the last two days with Bartolo Colon and Freddy Garcia starting. The Yankees have some interest in obtaining pitching help at the deadline, which is two weeks from now, but they know they have one constant and it is Sabathia.

Gardner and Jeter led the offense, Gardner with three hits and Jeter with two. Jeter had an RBI, Curtis Granderson had a hit and a walk and Mark Teixeira had a walk. Robinson Cano had a hit, a walk, Nick Swisher had a hit, and Andruw Jones had a hit and an RBI. Eduardo Nunez had an RBI and Francisco Cervelli drew a walk. Nunez committed his 12th error of the season. The defense has to improve for Nunez if he wants to be a quality major leaguer. Swisher had a double and Gardner had two. The Yankees were 2-14 with runners in scoring position and they left nine men on base.

Yunel Escobar had an RBI single in the first inning to give the Jays a 1-0 lead. In the second inning Jones had an RBI single and Nunez had an RBI groundout. Granderson scored on a wild pitch in the third inning to make it 3-1 Yankees and in the fourth Jeter had an RBI single to complete the scoring.

The Yankees won their first game of the four game series. The Yankees got roughed up the first couple of games losing 16-7 and 7-1. The Yankees will try to split the four game series on Sunday afternoon with Phil Hughes making the start. The Yankees are 1 1/2 behind the Boston Red Sox in the AL East. The Yankees are five games ahead of the Tampa Bay Rays in the wild card race. The Yankees record is 54-37 and the Jays are 47-48.
