Yankees rough up the Rangers on day Jeter goes to the DL

By Gary W. Marchese Jr.

Bronx, NY (Jun 15) – The New York Yankees defeated the Texas Rangers by the score of 12-4. C.C. Sabathia made the start and although he was not that sharp, he did not need to be. Sabathia has been the beneficiary of great offensive support all season and this game was no different.

The Yankees offense was on fire tonight after being shutdown on Monday night. Eduardo Nunez who is now the starting shortstop had a couple of hits, Curtis Granderson hit his major league leading 21st homerun. Jose Bautista also has 21 homeruns.

Sabathia pitched seven innings giving up eight hits and four runs. He did not walk a single batter and struck out six others. Sabathia improved to 8-4 on the season with a 3.28 ERA. Luis Ayala pitched an inning striking out one batter, Lance Pendleton pitched an inning giving up two walks, and he struck out two others.

Brett Gardner was and probably will be for the most part the leadoff hitter. He had three hits, a walk and an RBI. Granderson had two hits and four RBI, Mark Teixeira had a hit and two RBI and Alex Rodriguez had two hits and two RBI. Robinson Cano had a hit and an RBI, Jorge Posada had a hit, he made a couple of nice defensive plays at first base, and Nick Swisher had two hits a walk and an RBI. Nunez had two hits and an RBI. Posada, Teixeira, Rodriguez and Swisher each had a double. Swisher, Granderson and Cano each had a homerun. Gardner had a stolen base, the Yankees were 6-11 with runners in scoring position and they left three men on base.

The Yankees jumped out to a 6-0 lead in the second inning. Rodriguez singled, Posada doubled and Swisher walked. The Yankees had the bases loaded and one out with Nunez up, Nunez hit an RBI single. Gardner had an RBI single to make it 2-0. Granderson had a two run single to make it 4-0 and Teixeira doubled home two more runs to make it 6-0.

In the third inning, Swisher hit a solo homerun to make it 7-0.

Michael Young hit a two-run single in the fourth to get the Rangers on the board. In the bottom of the fourth Rodriguez hit a two, run double to make it 9-2.

In the fifth inning, the Rangers scored a run on a Craig Gentry double and a Elvis Andrus groundout. It was 9-4 Yankees.

In the sixth inning, Granderson hit a two-run homerun to make it 11-4 and Cano hit a solo homerun to make it 12-4.

The Yankees improved their record to 37-28. The Yankees are in second place and now 1 ½ games behind the Boston Red Sox. They picked up a game with their win as Boston lost on Tuesday night. The Yankees have now won five out of their last six games. The Yankees and Rangers will play game two of their three game series on Wednesday night.

It will be Derek Holland against Ivan Nova. Jeter was sitting with Nunez a lot and talking to him, probably mentoring him. Jeter does not like being benched but he will need this time to heal and you can see him being like a player coach with the rookies.
