Yankees bats bust out as Yankees are fired up

By Gary W. Marchese Jr.

Bronx, NY (Jun 11) – The New York Yankees defeated the Cleveland Indians on Friday night by the score of 11-7. Ivan Nova started for the Yankees and pitched a good game; he needed a game like that. It got ugly early on as Mark Teixeira was drilled in the back after a Curtis Granderson homerun. The benches both emptied and manager Joe Girardi went toe to toe with Cleveland manager Manny Acta. To say Girardi was ticked off is an understatement.

Nova pitched seven innings giving up two runs and four hits. He walked three and struck out six. Nova improved his record to 5-4 and his ERA now is at 4.30. Kevin Whelan made his major league debut and what an adventure it was; he pitched 2/3 of an inning and walked four batters giving up one run. Amaury Sanit pitched 2/3 of an inning giving up four hits and four runs with a couple of strikeouts, Lance Pendleton gave up a walk and Mariano Rivera pitched 2/3 of an inning giving up one hit.

The bullpen is going to be a work in progress now with Joba Chamberlain and Rafael Soriano both on the disabled list. Chamberlain is done for the year and Soriano is not close to coming back. Pedro Feliciano was signed in the off-season and has never started this season. The Yankees have Boone Logan, Rivera and Dave Robertson as the only regular bullpen pitchers right now.

The offense exploded for 11 runs and 15 hits. Curtis Granderson and Alex Rodriguez hit homeruns, Brett Gardner, Granderson, Derek Jeter, Rodriguez and Mark Teixeira all had doubles. The Yankees even had five stolen bases in the game. Gardner had two, Teixeira, Jeter and Granderson had the other ones. Jeter had a hit and a walk; he is now nine hits away from 3000. He has six games to go at home to get it.

Granderson who was in a bad slump looks like he is coming out of it, he had two hits a walk and an RBI. Teixeira had a hit, three RBI and two walks. He also got hit by a pitch that started a bench-clearing melee. Rodriguez had two hits, two RBI, a walk, Robinson Cano had three hits, an RBI and a walk, and Nick Swisher had an RBI and two walks. Jorge Posada had three hits and an RBI, Gardner had two hits and an RBI and Francisco Cervelli had a hit.

The Yankees jumped out to an early 3-0 lead. In the first inning, they had three walks and then Cano delivered an RBI single. Swisher hit a sacrifice fly to make it 2-0 and Posada had an RBI single to extend the lead to 3-0. In the second inning, Granderson hit a solo homerun to make it 4-0 Yankees. Teixeira was hit and then the benches cleared and the melee began. There were no punches thrown although it looked like Girardi was going to hit someone.

Gardner had an RBI double in the third to make it 5-0. Rodriguez made it 6-0 with a solo homerun in the fourth inning. In the fifth inning, Michael Brantley grounded into a force out to score a run. Nova was in some trouble that inning but escaped and it was 6-1 Yankees. In the sixth inning, Santana hit a solo homerun for the Indians to make it 6-2. In the bottom of the sixth, the Yankees got the run back to make it 7-2. Cano struck out swinging but the ball got past the catcher allowing a run to score.

In the seventh, the Yankees really broke it open with a Teixeira three run double and a Rodriguez RBI double. It was 11-3 Yankees and then the game got ugly. The Yankees had trouble closing it out and eventually had to turn to their closer with a big lead. In the eighth, the Indians got a run on a Cord Phelps walk and in the ninth inning, they scored four runs to make it an 11-7 game. Santana had an RBI single, Shin-Soo Choo walked to score a run and Matt LaPorta had a two run single.

The Yankees snapped their three game losing streaks and improved their record to 34-27 and the Indians dropped their record to 34-27. The Yankees are two games behind the division leading Boston Red Sox in the AL East. They are two games ahead of the third place Tampa Bay Rays. The two teams will face-off in game two of their four game series Saturday afternoon at 1:00PM. It will be Mitch Talbot against Bartolo Colon in the pitching match-up.
