Yankees show off their muscle in Subway Series Win

By Gary W. Marchese Jr.

Bronx, NY (May 22) – The New York Yankees defeated the New York Mets by the score of 7-3 on Saturday night. A.J. Burnett made the start and after it looked like he was going to blow up in the beginning, he settled down and pitched a good ballgame. The bullpen was great as usual and the offense broke out the long ball.

Burnett pitched 6 1/3 innings giving up three runs on six hits with three walks and four strikeouts. He improved to 5-l3 on the season. Boone Logan gave up a hit, Dave Robertson got both batters out that he faced one by a strikeout and Joba Chamberlain pitched a perfect inning with a strikeout. Luis Ayala pitched an inning with two strikeouts.

Chris Capuano started for the Mets and pitched 5 1/3 innings giving up six hits and six runs, he did not walk a batter and struck out five. He is now 3-5 on the season. Pedro Beato pitched 1 2/3 innings of scoreless relief with a strikeout; he set a Mets rookie record for most innings without giving up a run. He is now at 18 2/3 innings pitched without allowing a run. Taylor Buchholz pitched an inning giving up a hit and a run.

The Yankees hit four homeruns in this game accounting for six of their runs. Alex Rodriguez, Mark Teixeira, Russell Martin and Curtis Granderson hit the homeruns. Derek Jeter had two hits, Teixeira had three RBI and Rodriguez had another hit, which was a single. Rodriguez and Granderson each had one RBI coming on the homeruns.

The Yankees usually are not able to manufacture runs and in this game, they were only 0-1 with runners in scoring position. They hit the homeruns today, which took care of that problem, but they do rely on the homerun too much, that is how they score their runs, when they do not hit homers they do not score that many runs.

Jose Reyes had three hits for the Mets as he continues to have a strong season. Daniel Murphy had two hits, Carlos Beltran had a hit and an RBI and Jason Bay had a walk and an RBI. Fernando Martinez had a walk; Justin Turner had a hit and an RBI. The Mets were 3-8 with runners in scoring position and they left seven men on base.

The Mets got on the board right away in the first inning with two runs. Reyes doubled, Murphy singled and Beltran walked all before there was an out. Bay hit a sacrifice fly and Justin Turner hit an RBI single. It was 2-0 Mets before the Yankees got up to bat.

In the second inning, Martin hit a two-run homerun to tie the game at two. The Yankees took a 4-2 lead in the third inning on a Teixeira two run homerun. In the fourth inning, Beltran hit an RBI single and it was 4-3 Yankees. In the sixth inning, Granderson and Rodriguez hit solo homeruns to give the Yankees the 6-3 lead, they would tack on one more run in the eighth inning, and they would win the game 7-3.

The two teams will play the rubber game of the three game series on Sunday afternoon. The pitching matchup is Ivan Nova vs. Mike Pelfrey; the game is at 1:05 on the YES Network, TBS and SNY.

The Yankees are now 24-20 and tied for first place in the AL East with the Tampa Bay Rays. The Mets are 22-23 and in fourth place in the NL East, they are one game ahead of the Washington Nationals who are in last place. The Red Sox are only ½ a game behind the Yankees, the AL East looks like it will be a close race throughout between the three teams.
