Yankees salvage the final game in Seattle behind their Ace

By Gary W. Marchese Jr.

Seattle, WA (May 29) – The New York Yankees defeated the Seattle Mariners by the score of 7-1 on Sunday afternoon. C.C. Sabathia made the start and pitched the way an ace is supposed to do. The Yankees offense went to work and gave him plenty of support. The Yankees had a big third inning as they scored five runs and took a 6-0 lead and cruised to victory.

Sabathia pitched eight innings giving up one run on five hits; he walked three and struck out five. Sabathia is now 6-3 on the season with a 2.98 ERA. Lance Pendleton pitched an inning giving up a hit. The Yankees needed length out of their starter and that is just what they got. A.J. Burnett only gave them five innings on Friday and yesterday was a 12-inning game so the bullpen was in no shape to have to pitch in this game.

Derek Jeter had a hit in this game putting him 20 away from 3000. Curtis Granderson had three hits, Mark Teixeira had a hit and an RBI and Alex Rodriguez had a hit. Robinson Cano had a hit and an RBI, Nick Swisher had a hit, an RBI, and two walks and Andruw Jones had a hit, three RBI and a walk. Eduardo Nunez had a hit and an RBI and Francisco Cervelli had a hit.

Jones and Granderson had doubles, Nunez had his first career triple and Swisher hit his third homerun of the season. The Yankees were 4-11 with runners in scoring position and left seven men on base.

The Yankees got on the board first in the second inning on a solo homerun by Swisher. The Yankees added to their lead in the third inning with five runs. Cano singled driving in a run, Jones doubled home three runs, which were the big blow in the game, and Nunez tripled home another run.

It was 6-0 Yankees after three innings. In the fourth inning Teixeira hit an RBI single to make it 7-0, the Mariners scored their only run in the sixth inning on a Justin Smoak solo homerun. In the fifth inning, the Mariners had the bases loaded and one out, Sabathia got out of it with a 1-2-3 double play. Sabathia pumped his fist as he left the field, it was a 7-0 game.

The Yankees improved their record to 28-23, good for second place in the AL East. The Yankees are 1 ½ games out of first place, if the Red Sox lose tonight they will be a game out with Tampa Bay right behind the Yankees at two games out. The Yankees will play the Athletics at 4:05 on Monday afternoon, which is Memorial Day.

The Yankees will try to bounce back and win the series in Oakland and have a 500 record on the road trip headed to Anaheim. The Yankees just need to survive this long road trip and then come home and do some damage. They are right there in the division so they do not want to let it get away from them and when they return home, they will be taking on the Boston Red Sox.
