Obama Releases Birth Certificate, 8 Killed in Afghan Shooting

April 27, 2011 – In a move aimed at quieting “birther” rhetoric, President Obama made public his original, long-form birth certificate, which can be viewed on this link . During a brief appearance in the White House pressroom Wednesday, Obama said he was amused by the controversy, but the country had “better stuff to do.”

Donald Trump, on a trip in New Hampshire, told reporters he was “honored to have played such a big role” in hopefully putting birther claims to rest. The president to replace Defense Secretary Robert Gates sometime this summer has tapped CIA Director Leon Panetta. Gen. David Petraeus, the current commander in Afghanistan, will take over as CIA chief. Gates previously said he would step aside this year.

Overseas, an Afghan Air Force pilot opened fire at Kabul’s airport Wednesday, killing seven U.S. troops and a civilian contractor. The pilot was also killed. A Defense Ministry spokesman said the shooting took place following “an argument.” Officials believe the incident is the latest in a string of recent “rogue” attacks by Afghans against NATO-led forces.

At least nine protestors were killed when security forces in Yemen fired on a crowd of 100,000 demonstrators in Sanaa. Government opponents were in the streets as part of a country-wide civil disobedience campaign that closed schools, businesses and government offices.

Syrian army tanks and troops deployed throughout the country overnight in President Assad’s latest attempt to quell six-weeks of demonstrations. The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights claims to have the names of 453 people killed in the crackdown. Many countries, including the U.S., are considering sanctions to protest the actions of the Assad government.
