April 13, 2011 – Calling the Republican proposal for deficit reduction “a deeply pessimistic vision of America’s future,” President Obama outlined his own plan with broad strokes Wednesday in a speech at George Washington University. The plan will cut $4 trillion from the deficit over 12 years, including $2 trillion across the board. Saying a “serious” proposal must put everything on the table, the president’s approach touches on all segments of the budget, including entitlements and military spending.
On the subject of revenues, Obama pledged he would not sacrifice Medicare or Medicaid to underwrite tax relief for the wealthy. He said he would “refuse to renew” the Bush tax cuts.
TSA screeners at New Orleans Armstrong International Airport are under fire after a videotape of an agent performing an “enhanced search” on a six-year-old girl appeared on the internet. It is unclear why the search occurred since the agency’s policy is to not perform pat-downs on children under 13 years of age.
A 10-year-old boy escaped an apparent murder-suicide in Newburgh, N.Y. The boy’s mother intentionally drove her minivan into the Hudson River, killing herself and her three younger children. Rescuers believe the boy managed to open and then exit the vehicle through a power window.
Basketball star Kobe Bryant was caught on camera shouting a homophobic slur at a referee during a game in Los Angeles Tuesday. Bryant later released a statement saying his comments were made out of frustration “during the heat of the game” and were not intended to offend anyone in the gay and lesbian communities.
