Yankees lose to the Twins but regular bullpen looks good

By Gary W. Marchese Jr.

Tampa, FL (Mar 13) – The New York Yankees lost to the Minnesota Twins on Sunday afternoon by the score of 9-2. Freddy Garcia made the start and for the first time this spring struggled. He pitched 2 2/3 innings giving up six hits and four runs with two walks and three strikeouts. It was the first time this spring he gave up any runs.

Joe Girardi said he would watch closely now in his next couple of starts to see how he bounces back from this. Eric Wordkemper pitched 1 1/3 innings giving up two hits and four runs with none of them being earned. He walked one and struck out one batter.

The big pitchers in the bullpen pitched today with Rafael Soriano, Mariano Rivera, and David Robertson all pitching a scoreless inning. Soriano gave up a hit, Rivera struck out the side, and Robertson had a strikeout. Andrew Brackman, who is one of the three highly regarded Killer B’s pitched 1 2/3 innings and was a little wild but he gave up two hits and one run, which was unearned. He had two walks and a strikeout. Ryan Pope made one pitch and got a groundout.

Alex Rodriguez continued his great hitting with a solo homerun. He also had a single. Derek Jeter, Mark Teixeira, Robinson Cano and Eric Chavez. Kevin Russo had an RBI. Eduardo Nunez, Gustavo Molina, Austin Krum and Russell Martin each drew a walk. The Yankees didn’t produce much but they did have a lot of hard hit balls that just didn’t find holes on this day.

The Yankees are now 6-10 in the spring. They got to one game over 500 and have now lost five games in a row. If this were the regular season then maybe, there would be a cause for concern. This is only spring training though and although some of the fans make a big deal out of it, it just does not matter at all.

The Yankees will make the long road trip to Fort Myers tomorrow to take on the Boston Red Sox. They will play at 7:05PM and the game will be carried on ESPN2. The Yankees will be taking their regular outfielders on the trip but that may be it for the regulars.

The Red Sox are planning to play their regulars although it may not be for long. Sergio Mitre makes the start for the Yankees and for the Red Sox it will be former Yankee Alfredo Aceves.
