Yankees Spring Training about to get Loud

By Gary W. Marchese Jr.

Tampa, FL (Feb 19) – Yankees pitchers and catchers reported at the beginning of the week and now Saturday position players will report for physicals. The first official workout of the full squad will be Sunday with the first exhibition game next Saturday. We are moving along quicker this year with a March 31 Opening Day.

Spring Training can be very mundane with not a lot going on especially in the beginning. It is bullpens, PFP’s, and plenty of batting practice but once the position player’s report it gets better. Finally, the games begin it goes all the way to October and you hope deep into the month close to November.

The Yankees do not expect any position players absent, with Hector Noesi still fighting visa issues.  He may report by Sunday completing the spring-training camp roster.

Here are some of the news and notes from Yankees Camp.

Rafael Soriano has yet to throw a bullpen. Joe Girardi said he would probably get on the mound for the first time next week and Mariano Rivera will wait a little longer. There are plenty of pitchers already pitching off a mound and they are slightly ahead of last year’s pace. Girardi said many of the players got an early start down in Tampa and they are ahead of schedule.

Chad Jennings of the Lohud Yankees Blog went to the minor league complex today to see if any major leaguers were hitting and the guard said the only one there was Ramiro Pena. It looks like the regular team members took off today and will report tomorrow for physicals and get back at it. Gustavo Molina did not catch today because he felt some pain in his leg. Girardi said it is minor, nothing alarming about it. Greg Golson got an early start moving into his locker. He showed up in street clothes carrying a bunch of stuff.

Alan Horne was a big prospect for the Yankees and Eastern League Pitcher of the Year in 2007. He has been battling injuries and will be throwing off a half mound around March 1 for those interested in that kind of think.

Ivan Nova received special attention from the pitching coach this morning. Larry Rothschild stood in the batter’s box to mimic a batter being there. He has been having a couple of players throw early bullpens so he can spend more one on one time with each. Joba Chamberlain, Phil Hughes, and Dave Robertson have moved past just throwing fastballs and have been mixing up their pitches.

Many Yankees arrived at spring training early with the Yankees going at it hard right from day one so they appear to be ahead of schedule at this point. It will not be much longer now until we are talking about games and performances and who is the leading candidate for a spot in the rotation. It is just beginning to become interesting and once actual games begin, you can analyze the results.
