February 16 – In a showdown vote over funding for a new fighter, jet engine lawmakers have killed the program. The move will save taxpayers $3 billion. What is looked at as a win for the White House may be a loss for House Speaker John Boehner who’s state has around 1,000 workers invested in the project.

Borders bookstores filed for bankruptcy protection Wednesday, saying it will close 200 of its 642 stores. The 40-year old company was instrumental in developing the superstore concept, which put many locally owned bookshops out of business.

One deputy U.S. Marshal was killed and two others wounded while serving an arrest warrant in West Virginia. A drug suspect was also shot and killed in the exchange, which took place this morning in Elkins.

Governor Rick Scott of Florida has rejected government funding to construct a high-speed train line in his state. In declining the money the Tea Party-backed Scott said that “government cannot spend what it doesn’t take in.” He was also critical of the Obama budget.

A truck left New York today for a two month, 25 state tour. It carries a billboard depicting a running tally of Americans killed by guns since the Tucson shootings (the number stood at 1,300 as the truck departed). It is part of New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg’s Mayors Against Illegal Guns, which is lobbying congress for stricter gun laws.
