Flushing, NY (Nov 3) – The New York Mets have begun the process of purging four years of disappointment beginning the process by hiring new general manager Sandy Alderson last week. His first hire was former Blue Jays general manager J.P. Ricciardi. It was between the Mets and Red Sox for his services and he picked the Mets according to him because of his past relationship with Alderson.
Alderson had him on his staff in Oakland before Ricciardi joined the Blue Jays. It looks like he could bring in at least one more former protégé but we will wait and see what happens with that. The Mets are now set to begin the interview process for manager.
The Mets announced last evening that they will interview Bob Melvin who is currently a scout and bench coach Dave Jauss. Alderson said they expect to have a schedule of upcoming interviews later in the week. It is believed they will also interview A Brooklyn Cyclones manager Wally Backman, third-base coach Chip Hale, AAA manager Ken Oberkfell, AA manager Tim Teufel and minor league field coordinator Terry Collins. I think just about every Mets fan wants Bobby Valentine but it does not look like that will even be a possibility.
The Mets after they hire their manger will look to rebuild the team. It is not going to be easy but the first thing Alderson will try to do is unload second base man Luis Castillo and starting pitcher Oliver Perez. If he can do that, the fans will love him right off the bat. I think he will also try to trade center fielder Carlos Beltran and maybe even think about Jose Reyes and David Wright as trade pieces. I do not think ultimately they will go anywhere but you never know.
Reyes did have his 2011 option picked up by the Mets today for 11 million. There is a chance he does sign a long term deal however, they may just go with that for this year and see how it plays out.
Wright is the face of the franchise and I think he would be the least likely to go anywhere. I think the Mets need to build their team around Citi Field and a good start would be getting Carl Crawford a free agent outfielder from the Tampa Bay Rays.
