Jets Shutout at home by Packers

By Gary W. Marchese Jr.

East Rutherford, NJ (Oct 31) – The Jets lost to the Green Bay Packers this afternoon by the score of 9-0. It was Halloween and it sure was a frightful day for the Jets. They could not get anything going offensively and when they did, they would turn the ball over.

The quarterback Mark Sanchez threw for 256 yards as well as, an interception. The Jets actually had the ball longer by a couple of minutes over the Packers in this game. The Jets outgained the Packers in total yards 360-237. The Jets though did lose one fumble to go along with the two interceptions and that is why they lost this game.

Ladanian Tomlinson led the team in rushing today with 16 carries for 54 yards. It was not a very good day running the ball for the Jets. Shonn Greene had six attempts for 22 yards. The leading receiver for the Jets was Jericho Cotchery who had four catches for 89 yards.

Dustin Keller caught two balls for 45 yards, Santonio Holmes caught three for 43 yards, and Tomlinson had five catches for 37 yards. Braylon Edwards had one catch for 32 yards and Greene had one for 10 yards. Brad Smith lone fumble, Tomlinson, and Edwards fumbled but they did not lose the ball. It was an ugly game with the Packers not doing much either at least point wise.

The Packers though got on the scoreboard with three field goals. The Jets saw their five game winning streak end and were shutout for the first time at home in four years. Head coach Rex Ryan said, “I wish we could play it again, do it over, but there are no do-over’s in this league.” The wind may have been a factor with the passing and kicking games, but both teams had to deal with the same issues.

The Packers kicked a field goal with 27 seconds left to nail down the victory.

Sanchez’ two interceptions were on disputed calls and he did have four passes that were dropped by receivers. He put the blame on himself though which is very mature of the young quarterback. The one interception should not have been one but the Jets used both of their challenges in the first half and could not dispute the call, if they could have, it would have been overturned, and who knows what would have happened.

Jason Taylor a Jets linebacker said, “Don’t get me started unless you want to pay for my fines.” He was talking about the calls, which he obviously did not agree with.

Tomlinson joined Walter Payton as the only backs in history with 13,000 yards rushing and 4,000 yards receiving. The Jets schedule does get easier the next three weeks but there are no easy games in this league. You have to play well no matter what and not think you are just going to win by going on the field.

The Jets will head to Detroit to take on an improved Lions team but one they should still be able to beat. The Jets are 5-2 and second place in the AFC East behind the first place New England Patriots.
