Yankees finish regular season with loss and are Wild Card Champions

By Gary W. Marchese Jr.

Boston, MA (Oct 3) – The New York Yankees lost to the Boston Red Sox this afternoon by the score of 8-4. They finished the regular season one game behind the Tampa Bay Rays for first place in the AL East. The Yankees will be the wild card team and not have home field advantage at any point during the postseason.

Dustin Moseley started the game and gave a good effort but he was hurt by two two-run home runs. Moseley pitched five innings giving up five hits and four runs with two walks and three strikeouts. Royce Ring gave up a hit and a run without recording and out, Dave Robertson pitched 1/3 of an inning giving up one hit and two runs with two walks and a strikeout. Boone Logan retired both batters he faced, striking out one, Joba Chamberlain pitched an inning giving up a hit and a run with three strikeouts, and Sergio Mitre pitched a perfect inning.

Brett Gardner, Derek Jeter each had two hits, Jeter had an RBI. Mark Teixeira drew a walk, Alex Rodriguez had a hit, walk, and RBI and Robinson Cano picked up his 200th hit of the season and had an RBI. Nick Swisher had a hit, walk, and an RBI, Jorge Posada had a walk and Marcus Thames had a hit.

The Red Sox got on the board first in the first inning with a two-run home run by J.D. Drew. Swisher hit a solo home run in the second inning to make it a 2-1 game and the Yankees tied the game in the third inning on an RBI single by Rodriguez. The Red Sox scored two runs in the fifth inning on a two run home run by Jed Lowrie and added three more runs in the sixth inning to take a 7-2 lead. Ryan Kalish had an RBI single, Lars Anderson hit a sacrifice fly and Kalish stole home.

The Red Sox added another run on a Lowrie solo home run in the seventh inning. The Yankees scored a run in the eighth inning on a Cano RBI single and one run in the ninth inning on a Jeter RBI single.

The Yankees will now come home to work out and fly out to Minneapolis on Tuesday. The Yankees and Twins will play game one of the division series on Wednesday night at 8:37PM. C.C. Sabathia will go up against Francisco Liriano. Game two will be Thursday night in Minneapolis and Game 3 will be in New York on Saturday night. The times for the second and third games are 6:07 and 8:37PM respectively.

The Yankees will announce the rest of their rotation and roster on Tuesday after they get to Minnesota. The Yankees battled hard all year and it was a tough year in many ways for them and fell just short of the division title. The Yankees had a chance but just could not complete the task. Once the games start on Wednesday though that will all be forgotten, it will only matter if there is a game five or a game seven later on if the Yankees advance.

It is always an exciting time of year and it will be interesting as none of the American League teams is coming in to the postseason winning.
