Philadelphia, PA (Oct 23) – The San Francisco Giants defeated the Philadelphia Phillies by the score of 3-2. San Francisco wins the NL Pennant defeating the Phillies in six games to advance to their first World Series in eight years.
Jonathan Sanchez made the start for the Giants against Roy Oswalt. Sanchez pitched two innings giving up three hits and two runs with two walks and a strikeout.
Oswalt pitched six innings giving up nine hits and two runs with only one of them being earned. He did not walk a batter and struck out five. Ryan Madson who took the loss pitched two innings giving up two hits and one run with a walk and three strikeouts.
Brad Lidge pitched an inning giving up two hits and a walk and struck out two batters. Jeremy Affeldt pitched two perfect innings striking out two and Madison Bumgarner pitched two innings giving up three hits and a walk with a strikeout.
Javier Lopez got the win pitched a perfect inning with a strikeout, Tim Lincecum pitched 1/3 of an inning giving up two hits and he struck out a batter. Brian Wilson pitched 1 2/3 innings picking up the save; he walked two and struck out one.
Andres Torres and Freddy Sanchez each had three hits. Aubrey Huff had a hit and an RBI, Pat Burrell and Cody Ross each had a hit. Juan Uribe had two hits and an RBI and hit the game winning home run in the eighth inning. Jonathan Sanchez and Mike Fontenot each had a hit. Ryan Howard, Shane Victorino, and Raul Ibanez each had two hits for the Phillies.
Jimmy Rollins and Chase Utley each had a hit. Utley had a hit and a walk, Jayson Werth had an RBI and a walk while, Rollins had a walk, Placido Polanco drew two walks.
The Phillies got started early with two runs in the first inning. It looked like they would be off and running but their offense did not do much the rest of the game. Their feared offense was not much of a factor in this series and that is why they are going home. Utley hit an RBI double and Werth had a sacrifice fly to give Philly the 2-0 first inning lead. Aubrey Huff hit an RBI single in the third; a runner was thrown out at home also on the play keeping it 2-1 Phillies. Buster Posey would reach on a fielding error by Polanco and the game was tied at two.
The benches emptied in the third inning also when a pitch hit Utley but no one hot ejected and the game continued when cooler heads prevailed. The game remained tied at two until the eighth inning when Uribe would hit a solo home run. The Phillies left two on and had two outs for Howard in the bottom of the ninth but he struck out to end the game.
The World Series is now set with the San Francisco Giants facing off against the Texas Rangers. The Giants will make their first appearance since 2002. The World Series will begin on Wednesday night in San Francisco.
The Phillies were hoping to get this game and push it to a game seven tomorrow night. The Phillies were the two time defending National League Champions and wanted to go to their third straight World Series and see if they could get back the title after losing to the Yankees last season.
The Phillies were heavy favorites and this is a huge upset. I don’t think there was anyone that picked a Giants/Rangers World Series but that is what we have. I think the ratings will take a hit but it is good for baseball. There will be at least four more baseball games but only two teams are left standing.
