Las Vegas (Oct 22) – More than 9,000 supporters gathered today at Orr Middle School Park to welcome President Barack Obama at a rally for Senator Harry Reid. The polls show that Senator Reid, who is seeking his fifth term in the US Senate, is running even with opponent Sharron Angle, Tea Party endorsed GOP candidate.
Amongst the supporters were children who attended the middle school and their teachers. Many held signs that read “Moving America Forward Vote 2010.” Rory Reid, gubernatorial candidate, and son of Senator Harry Reid, spoke about the need for everyone to vote and vote early.
Dina Titus, representative who is running for her second term in the House, delivered the same message. Shelley Berkley, also up for reelection in the House of Representatives with a comfortable lead over her opponent, was shown much love when she spoke.
Representative Berkley presents herself as a tireless fighter for Nevadans. She spoke of how she loved this country and knew “everyone here loves this country.” She remembered November 1972 at 21 years of age, and a student at UNLV, voting for the first time. After 38 years, she still feels the same pride and honor now that she felt when she voted for the first time. She stated, “All Americans have a right to vote it’s not a spectator sport it takes all of us.”
When Senator Harry Reid spoke, he said “there are three important issues on my mind; jobs, jobs, and more jobs, and it is my job to create them”, alluding to a comment by Sharron Angle that it wouldn’t be her job as a US Senator to create jobs.
The President’s motorcade arrived and the supporters went wild. Jobs and voting was the message. President Obama spoke of eight million jobs lost before his administration took office and said, “He and Harry weren’t born with a silver spoon in our mouths.” He spoke of people in Nevada hurting with Nevada’s high unemployment, and high foreclosure rate.
The President encouraged everyone to vote and vote early. “They want us to give them the keys back,” said the President. The Republicans want tax cuts for the rich but President Barack Obama said, “He wants tax cuts for the middle class, and people who showed up in 2008 to vote should show up in 2010.”
