Flushing, NY (Oct 3) – The New York Mets lost to the Washington Nationals by the score of 2-1. If it was not bad enough that this was the last day of another disappointing season for the Mets they had to play 14 innings and end up losing.
Mike Pelfrey made the start and pitched seven innings giving up four hits and one run with two walks and four strikeouts. Ryota Igarashi pitched an inning giving up a hit and striking out two, Hisanori Takahashi pitched an inning giving up a hit and a walk and striking out one. Sean Green pitched an inning striking out one, Manny Acosta pitched three perfect innings striking out three and Oliver Perez got the loss pitching 1/3 of an inning and giving up one run and three walks with a strikeout. Pat Misch pitched to two batters and got them both out.
The only batter in the Mets lineup that had more than one hit was Ruben Tejada who had two. Jose Reyes and Joaquin Arias each had a hit, Ike Davis, Angel Pagan, Lucas Duda and Josh Thole each had a hit. David Wright drew a walk, Thole drew two walks, and that was all the offense the Mets could muster. The Nationals took a 1-0 lead in the fifth inning on a Alberto Gonzalez RBI single.
The Mets tied the game in the bottom of the inning on a groundout by Thole. The score remained that way until the 14th inning when Justin Maxwell walked with the bases loaded to score the winning run and make the final score 2-1. The season ended for two teams who are going nowhere. The Mets once again had another disappointing season, finishing under 500.
The Mets final record is 79-83, they were out of it a long time ago. The Mets had something going in the first half but came out of the All-Star Break on a long road trip, it was a bad one, and they never recovered. The Mets real work will begin now though as they will be searching for a new general manager and then manager.
It looks like ownership will be meeting with both Omar Minaya and Jerry Manuel tomorrow so they could be fired as early as tomorrow and the search will begin. The Mets have to do something drastic and this is the first step, I am sure there will be more to come such as getting rid of Oliver Perez and Luis Castillo and maybe even Carlos Beltran.
