Game Six ALCS Yankees vs. Rangers | Bronx Bombers Looking to Stay Alive

By Gary W. Marchese Jr.

Arlington, TX (Oct 21) – The New York Yankees and Texas Rangers are back in Arlington where they started this series. The Rangers lead the best of seven series three games to two with game six being tomorrow night. Phil Hughes will go up against Colby Lewis in a rematch of game two.

The Rangers had no trouble with Hughes and although Lewis did not get through the sixth he only gave up a couple of runs. I would guess that this is going to be a different offense that Lewis will see and a lot more difficult to get through. Hughes needs to pitch better than he did or he will not be around for long at all.

Here are some news and notes as we get ready for game six.

The Yankees announced today that C.C. Sabathia would be available out of the bullpen tomorrow night. He could throw up to 50 pitches although I am guessing if he is used it may be for an inning or so. The best-case scenario for the Yankees is to have Hughes pitch six good inning and have the lead. If they do this, they will use Wood and Rivera a lot again tomorrow to close out the game.

The Rangers want to end this series tomorrow night but they know they have Cliff Lee ready for game seven if necessary. The Yankees are saying Wood and Rivera are both available for six outs. If Rivera gets six outs tomorrow though Girardi said it would not be likely, he would be able to do that again in Game 7. I think that is fine to say that but if the Yankees ever got to a game seven and had a one run lead in the eighth inning and had to go to him they would do it.

Lance Berkman will be available tomorrow. Girardi said I am sure he is sore but it will not affect his play, he will be in there tomorrow night. Girardi on the track at Yankee Stadium “If we feel it’s something we need to address, we will address it.”

Alex Rodriguez said he never had any idea that the player who ran onto the field Monday night was after him. He said he read it in the papers, he said it is always a little scary but our people took care of it.

Mark Teixeira said it was really weird to watch a playoff game from the bench, he said he has done it in the regular season but hopes that he will never have to do it again for a playoff game.

Colby Lewis did a good job in game two, that was the first time the Yankees saw him but they get another crack tomorrow. Curtis Granderson said he threw a lot of strikes and he doesn’t expect him to deviate from his plan and that the Yankees will stick to their plan.

I would be very surprised if the Yankees don’t hit him pretty hard tomorrow. I just think the bats got going yesterday and that they are too good to be shut down by a mediocre pitcher twice in one series. I think if the Rangers win this game it will have to be with a lot of runs. I would expect Hughes to be better on the other side, he really was roughed up but he is ready to make up for that.

Nelson Cruz who strained his hamstring in Game five and has been on the disabled list three times this season with hamstring injuries says that he will be ready go to tomorrow night. It will be interesting to see though how it will affect him in the field and if he has to run hard on the base paths. Ron Washington said pulling him from the game was a precaution.

Rangers Hall of Famer Tom Grieve who works as a team broadcaster will throw out the ceremonial first pitch.

Derek Jeter on workout day during the ALCS “It is always loose. These are the days that for us as players, we just want to get them over with. We’d much rather be playing than have today off.”

Mark Teixeira spoke out against the track at Yankee Stadium today, he said it is dangerous and needs to be changed. A lot has been made because of Berkman avoiding a potential serious injury last night when he slipped on the track. Teixeira said, every time he has dove over there he comes up with scrapes and marks because the surface is so hard. He says you can ask the outfielders too, it just is not safe.

The man no one wanted to talk about or face Cliff Lee is the pitcher the Yankees are now hoping to get another crack at because that would mean they played well and won game six. IF the Yankees do win, they will be on a two game winning streak and momentum will have shifted but the Rangers will still be home and have the ace and potential playoff MVP Lee on the mound. He is human but so far, in his postseason career he is 7-0 with a 1.44 ERA. It is amazing what he has accomplished and it would be great theatre to see that.

The Yankees trying to make a great comeback, the Rangers trying to go to their first World Series and Lee the free agent that the Yankees will come hard after in a couple of weeks. First, though there will be game six tomorrow night.
