Yankees unable to tame the Birds

By Gary W. Marchese Jr.

Bronx, NY (Sept 6) – The New York Yankees lost to the Baltimore Orioles today by the score of 4-3. The Yankees have now lost two in a row after an eight game winning streak.

The Yankees have won six of their first eight games in this 10 game home stand. The Yankees have also played five-day games in a row and will play tomorrow night.

A.J. Burnett made the start and made progress but still lost the game. Burnett gave up four runs in seven innings allowing seven hits and four walks. He did strike out five and for him it was a step in the right direction. Burnett though is 10-13 and for the first time in his career has lost 13 games.

Boone Logan pitched two thirds of an inning giving up a hit and a walk with a strikeout. Dave Robertson pitched 1 1/3 innings giving up one hit and striking out one.

Derek Jeter, Mark Teixeira, Alex Rodriguez, Robinson Cano, and Marcus Thames each had a hit. Rodriguez had two RBI and became the first MLB player in history to have 14 different season of at least 100 RBI. Cano had one RBI. Rodriguez, Nick Swisher, Francisco Cervelli, and Lance Berkman each had a walk.

The Yankees offense did not offer up much as Matusz kept them off balance. Rodriguez has been swinging the bat well in the two games since he came off the disabled list. The Orioles took a 1-0 lead in the third inning and the Yankees answered back in the fourth with a solo home run by Rodriguez.

Baltimore scored a single run in the fifth and sixth innings to take a 3-1 lead. The Yankees scored two runs in the sixth to tie the game. One of the runs was a gift as Cano popped the ball up and there was miscommunication between the left fielder and shortstop on what should have been a routine out. The ball dropped between them allowing Teixeira to score from third base and tie the score.

Brian Roberts who is always a pain to the Yankees won the game with a two out RBI single in the seventh inning.

The Yankees remain 2 ½ games ahead of the Tampa Bay Rays in the AL East as they lost tonight to the Boston Red Sox. The Yankees would like to win the next two games to win the series against the Orioles and finish the longest home stand of the season at 8-2.

Ace CC Sabathia on the mound tomorrow night for the Yankees looking for his 20th victory of the season. The Yankees announced before the game that starting pitcher Andy Pettitte would be making a rehab start in Trenton on Wednesday; they later changed it to Thursday. It is possible he could be back after that start but he may make one more rehab start and then be back.

The Yankees will be happy to have him back and if he can make a few starts before the postseason with no problems, he should be the Game two starter.
