Swisher delivers a walk-off homer to finish off homestand

By Gary W. Marchese Jr.

Bronx, NY (Sept 8) – The New York Yankees defeated the Baltimore Orioles this afternoon by the score of 3-2. It was not easy and would have been a tough pill to swallow if the Yankees lost.

Had the Yankees lost this game it would have been the first sweep for Baltimore over the Yankees since 1986. It also would have been the first four game losing streak of the season for the Yankees. Currently the Yankees are the only team that has not lost four in a row. The Yankees also have not been swept at the New Stadium.

Ivan Nova made the start for the Yankees and continued his impressive run. This was probably his best outing as he pitched six innings giving up two runs on six hits with two walks and six strikeouts. Dave Robertson pitched 1 1/3 perfect innings with two strikeouts and Boon Logan struck out both batters he faced. Joba Chamberlain picked up the win with a perfect inning striking out two.

The Yankees offense did not do much at all; Brett Gardner had a hit and an RBI. Alex Rodriguez had two hits to keep up his hot hitting since returning from the DL and Nick Swisher had two hits and two RBI. Lance Berkman and Curtis Granderson each drew a walk and Marcus Thames had a hit.

The Yankees took the lead 1-0 lead in the third inning on a Gardner RBI double. The Orioles took the lead on a Matt Wieters two-run homer in the fifth inning, 2 to 1.

Swisher won the game with a two-run walk-off homer in the bottom of the ninth inning.

The Yankees would have lost their fourth in a row and finished the home stand at 6-4. With one swing of the bat, they had a very successful 7-3 home stand and avoided their first sweep at their New Stadium.

The Yankees offense has been struggling a little in the last three games and maybe this will be the big hit they needed. The Yankees are two games up in the AL East over the Tampa Bay Rays who are playing tonight at the Boston Red Sox. If the Rays lose the lead will be back to 2 ½ games.

The Yankees will have an off day tomorrow and then start a nine game road trip through Texas, Tampa, and Baltimore. Jorge Posada was cleared to play after suffering concussion like symptoms. He was sent to the hospital during the game and all tests came back negative. It was announced that Phil Hughes would be skipped on Sunday and Dustin Moseley will take his place. This will help limit the innings on Hughes since he does have a cap.
