Calexico, CA (Sept 8) – It was another busy holiday weekend for Customs and Border Patrol agents working the Calexico Port of Entry in California. Over $1.3 million in narcotics being smuggled into the U.S. were seized.
It was Saturday morning, 8:00 a.m. as a 36-year-old Mexican male from Mexicali entered the checkpoint. Canine units working the checkpoint alerted agents to suspicious materials inside the vehicle.
Both the driver, and vehicle were escorted to a secondary inspection location were, agents conducting a thorough search of the vehicle discovered 58 pounds of cocaine. The driver and narcotics were handed over to the Customs and Border Protection ICE team for further investigation.
Sunday proved to be more of the same, as A-TCET were conducting searches utilizing canine units when one of the dogs alerted agents to a 1988 Chevrolet pick-up truck. Once again, the driver and vehicle were escorted to a secondary inspection station where agents recovered an estimated 98 pounds of cocaine hidden in a special compartment in the vehicles gas tank.
The 46-year-old Mexican male from Mexicali, was turned over to the ICE team for further investigation.
The following day, agents were alerted to a silver 2009 Toyota Corolla driven by a 30-year-old male U.S. citizen. The vehicle was searched at a secondary location where agents located 140 pounds of marijuana estimated at $140,000 hidden amongst the door panels.
The driver, and two occupants, a 24-year-old female, and 20-year-old-male both, U.S. citizens were taken into custody by ICE agents for further processing.
The drivers along with their passengers, in all the above incidents, were placed into custody at the Imperial County jail awaiting arraignment.
