Washington, D.C. (Sept 7) – The New York Mets defeated the Washington Nationals by the score of 3-2 this afternoon. R.A. Dickey made the start and pitched six innings giving up five hits and two runs with one strikeout.
Dickey became a 10 game winner for the first time in his career. He has been a bright spot on an otherwise dismal season. Elmer Dessens pitched a perfect inning with a strikeout and Bobby Parnell gave up one hit in 2/3 of an inning. Pedro Feliciano got the only hitter out that he faced and Hisanori Takahashi pitched one inning striking out one.
The Mets offense got two hits from Dickey and two from Luis Hernandez. Angel Pagan, Carlos Beltran, and Josh Thole each had a hit. Nick Evan had a pinch hit double. Evans, Hernandez, and Beltran had an RBI each. Beltran and Thole each drew a walk.
The Mets took a 2-0 lead in the third inning on a Hernandez double Beltran sacrifice fly.
The Nationals tied the score with two runs in the fifth inning. The two runs came on a Wilson Ramos home run. The Mets took a 3-2 lead in the seventh inning on an Evans double which turned out to be the winning hit.
The Mets will have the day off tomorrow and take on the Philadelphia Phillies starting Friday night at Citi Field. The Mets won two out of three in this series against the Nationals, a rare series win for the Mets on the road.
The Mets will begin a 10 game home stand on Friday night. The Mets are playing out the string at this point and have many players that were playing in AAA Buffalo this season getting playing time. The Mets need to make some evaluations and see what they may have going into spring training next season.
