Mets rookie impressive in win over Nationals

By Gary W. Marchese Jr.

Washington, D.C. (September 7)-The New York Mets defeated the Washington Nationals tonight by the score of 4-1. It was the Mets second win in a row over the Nationals.

Dillon Gee made his major league debut and was very impressive. He allowed one run in seven innings on two hits. Gee walked three and struck out four. Pedro Feliciano pitched 2/3 of an inning striking out a batter and Bobby Parnell faced one batter and got him out.

Hisanori Takahashi got the save with one inning of scoreless ball. Takahashi gave up two hits and struck out one.

Ike Davis led the Mets offense with two hits and three RBI. Carlos Beltran and Luis Hernandez each had a hit. Ruben Tejada and Gee had a hit; Gee also had an RBI to help his own cause.

The Mets took a 3-0 lead in the top of the first inning. Davis hit a three-run homer in the first inning. The Mets added a run in the second to make it a 4-0 game as Gee singled in a home run.

The Nationals got their only run in the sixth inning on a Willie Harris home run.

The Mets who are playing out the string were happy to see one of the young players come through in such a big way. Gee gives the Mets something to think about as they may have a couple of spots open in the starting rotation for next year. The Mets would like to finish strong and feel good about the team heading in to the winter.

The finale of this three game series will be tomorrow afternoon with R.A. Dickey taking on Livan Hernandez.
