Mets get blown out in Washington

By Gary W. Marchese Jr.

Chicago, IL (Sept 6) – The New York Mets were defeated by the Washington Nationals by the score of 13-3. This devastating defeat came one day after the Mets blasted the Cubs 18-5.

Mike Pelfrey made the start and was not effective at all. Pelfrey pitched 3 2/3 innings giving up five hits and six runs; he also walked three and struck out one. Raul Valdez pitched 1/3 of an inning giving up a hit, run and a walk, Sean Green pitched 2/3 of an inning giving up a hit and a walk.

Pat Misch pitched 1/3 of an inning retiring the only batter he faced. Ryota Igarashi pitched one terrible inning giving up two hits and five runs with three walks and a strikeout. Oliver Perez pitched two innings giving up three hits and one run with three strikeouts.

Angel Pagan, Chris Carter, and Josh Thole each had a hit. Thole had two RBI and a walk and David Wright had an RBI and a walk. Ike Davis drew two walks and Lucas Duda drew a walk. The Mets came back to reality one day after scoring 18 runs.

They just could not do much of anything offensively today. The Mets took a 2-0 lead in the first inning on a Pagan single and stolen base. Pagan went to third on a fielding error and Wright hit a sacrifice fly. The Mets drew three straight walks to score another run. The Mets took a 3-0 lead in the third inning on an RBI single by Thole.

The Nationals started their come back with a run in the third and then they scored five runs in the fourth inning. Ivan Rodriguez had a two run double and Michael Morse had an RBI single. Nyjer Morgan had an RBI single, Ryan Zimmerman walked to score another run, and it was 6-3 Nationals. The Nationals scored another run in the fifth to break the game wide open with five runs in the sixth inning. The five runs in the sixth inning, highlighted by a Danny Espinosa grand slam. The Nationals scored one more run in the seventh inning.

The Mets have started looking towards next season, as they are not going to make a run at the postseason. They have brought up some young players and placed them into rotation. They will start Dillon Gee in place of Johan Santana taking no chances of hurting Santana further with his next start.

It looks like Bobby Parnell will be the closer to end the season and the Mets will get a good look if that is the direction they want to head. The Mets want to close out the season strong and then see what direction they will go in, as they surely will have a new manager and maybe even a new general manager.
