NYC, NY (Sept 03) – Hurricane Earl, the once powerful Category 4 storm heading up the eastern seaboard, has been downgraded to a still dangerous Category 1.
The National Hurricane Center is predicting Earl will be nothing more than a serious Tropical Storm as it passes the once threatened Massachusetts coastline. Earl brought minor damage to the North Carolina coast with sporadic power outages. Roads on the Outer Banks remain flooded, with light damage, and power outages.
Still, not the good news for businesses up and down the coast relying on a surge of vacationers over the holiday weekend to keep the cash registers busy.
Earl should really begin to lose its punch as it travels further north into the relatively colder waters of the northern Atlantic.
Lifeguards and safety personnel are still advising, and in most cases closing the waters to all swimmers however, some beaches remain open. Beachgoers are warned to expect storm surges with treacherous undertows, that can cause life threatening conditions and are advising caution for those simply “walking” the beaches.
