C.C. not able to win 20th game as Yankees fall to Orioles

By Gary W. Marchese Jr.

Bronx, NY (Sept 7) – The New York Yankees were defeated by the Baltimore Orioles tonight by the score of 6-2. It was the Yankees third loss in a row after winning eight straight games breaking an otherwise perfect run.

CC Sabathia made the start and he was looking for his 20th victory for the first time in his career. Sabathia pitched 6 1/3 innings giving up five earned runs on nine hits. Sabathia walked one and struck out five. Sabathia gave up six runs overall but one was unearned. Sabathia only lost for the second time in 19 career starts against the Orioles.

Kerry Wood struck out the only two batters he faced, continuing his dominance as a Yankee. Chad Gaudin pitched a perfect two innings with a strikeout.

The Yankees offense only produced two runs but they seemed much better tonight. They had some bounces go the wrong way especially in the seventh inning when they had first and second no outs and a pop up dropped in center field but Posada was thrown out at second because the ball was not deep enough and he had to hold up on the play.

Alex Rodriguez pinch-hit and hit a blistering line drive at the third baseman that got a glove on it, the ball rolled right to the shortstop that got the force at second, and no runner advanced saving a run.

Lance Berkman had a huge game with three hits, since coming off the disabled list, he is hitting nearly 500. Brett Gardner, Derek Jeter, Mark Teixeira, and Robinson Cano all had a base hit. Jorge Posada had a hit and an RBI and Cano had an RBI.

The Orioles jumped on Sabathia for three runs in the first inning and the Yankees never recovered. The Yankees scored a run in the bottom of the first on a Cano RBI single but the Orioles scored two runs in the third inning to take a 5-1 lead. The Yankees cut it to 5-2 but never got closer, their best opportunity came in the seventh, and they ran into some tough luck and did not score a run.

The Yankees remain in first place in the AL East with a 1 ½ game lead over the Tampa Bay Rays losing a game in the standings to them for the first time since August 23.

The Yankees remain nine games ahead of the Boston Red Sox and are in no real danger of missing the postseason. The Yankees will try to salvage the last game of the series and home stand tomorrow afternoon. The Yankees will head to Texas after an off day on Thursday.

Ivan Nova will make the start tomorrow afternoon and try continuing his impressive start to his big league career. The Yankees did not put Rodriguez in the starting lineup tonight but he should be in there tomorrow afternoon.
