Las Vegas (Sept 17) — Former President Bill Clinton is so charming; I overheard one supporter say, “I could listen to him read the phone book.” He was charming and he did the job he came to Las Vegas to do, make sure everyone knew he supported Rory Reid.
More than 1200 supporters attended the rally held at the House of Blues in the Mandalay Bay Hotel and Casino. Along with being the keynote speaker at the rally, Bill Clinton hosted a fundraiser, helping the campaign with almost a quarter of a million dollars. This was the second fundraiser he has hosted for the candidate.
You vote for Rory Reid and you get Cindy Reid. She was as charming as Bill Clinton introducing her husband as caring and concerned about the people of Nevada. She said, “Rory comes home in the evenings, and after asking how she and the children are, he then begins talking about Nevada residents and their loss of jobs and how they are going to make ends meet. She said, “You people are always on his mind and he worries about what he can do to solve those problems.”
Bill Clinton read a quote from Rory “Nevada could be the first state in the country that can become energy independent.” President Clinton went on to say that, if Nevada would invest in clean technology, and give exemptions to the people who make solar and wind energy and then attract people who make that stuff it would be good for Nevada’s economy. He said “sunshine and wind blows here” but money is needed to make this happen and he added the banks are sitting on 1.8 trillion dollars but they are afraid to loan it. If the state businesses, schools, banks, etc would convert to solar energy this would put Nevada’s unemployed construction workers back to work. He added the unemployment rate for Nevada’s construction workers is at 50% compared to 25% nationwide.
Rory Reid has a PLAN. On his website he says, “On Education, I will not compromise” There is nothing more important to Rory than transforming our schools. Rebuilding Nevada’s education system is centerpiece of Rory’s campaign. His vision for creating a broader economic base and higher-paying jobs depend upon how well we educate our people. We need to prepare young people for the cutting-edge jobs of the future. Moreover, that means Nevada must be positioned at the frontiers of education for the 21st Century. We need Economic Development through Great Education – and this is Rory Reid’s plan.
After the rally, I spoke with Cindy Reid for a few minutes pointing out the concerns the seniors of Nevada have that state workers and state retirees feared the new governor would cut their benefits to help balance the budget. She called Rory over to answer my question and he replied “Absolutely not.” He went on to add he would be a friend to seniors by working to eliminate fraud and abuse in Medicaid.
Rory Reid is Chairman of the Clark County Commission, has managed a budget bigger than the state’s general fund, and balanced it every year for the past seven years without raising taxes. He and Cindy have been married for 22 years and have three children. Nevada could be proud to make this family “The first Family of Nevada.”
