Chicago, IL (August 28) – The New York Yankees defeated the Chicago White Sox by the score of 12-9 tonight. CC Sabathia made the start and picked up his major league leading 18th victory.
It was not one of Sabathia’s best performances, giving up five runs but once the Yankees extended their lead from 6-5 to 10-5 he started getting it together picking up a bunch of strikeouts and making it through seven innings.
Sabathia is the true definition of an ace; he finds a way to win and fights through it always giving the Yankees a chance to win. Sabathia pitched seven innings giving up nine hits and five runs with one walk and nine strikeouts.
Joba Chamberlain got one out and gave up two hits and two runs; he did strike out a batter. Boone Logan gave up a hit in 2/3 of an inning and Dave Robertson really got hit hard giving up three hits and two runs. Mariano Rivera picked up his 26th save pitching an inning giving up a hit and walk.
The Yankees bats were wide-awake tonight. Eduardo Nunez had three hits, Nick Swisher had two hits, and three RBI and Robinson Cano had three hits. Marcus Thames had a big game with two home runs and Jorge Posada had two hits, two walks, and two RBI. Brett Gardner had a hit and two walks and Nunez had four RBI. Swisher got the Yankees started with a two-run homer in the first inning.
The White Sox got one back in the first and then Nunez hit a two run homer in the second inning. Thames hit a two run homer in the third and the Yankees had a 6-1 lead but back came the White Sox. The Sox scored two runs in the third on a Paul Konerko home run.
The Sox scored two more runs in the fourth on an Andrew Jones homer and it was 6-5 Yankees.
The Yankees seemed to put the game away with four runs in the fifth inning to make it 10-5. Posada hit a two run double and Nunez a two-run single but the White Sox wouldn’t go away quietly two in the eighth and two in the ninth. The Yankees would score one more in the eighth and one in the ninth and win the game 12-9.
The Yankees have split the first two games of the series and are now 2-3 on the six game road trip so they need a win tomorrow to take the series and have a 500-road trip. The Yankees will send Ivan Nova to the mound tomorrow against Gavin Floyd.
Nova it came out in the papers today was supposedly injecting former AA teammate Wilken De La Rosa with B12 shots. This is not illegal but it is to inject another person and this will be something to watch. I do not want to accuse anyone of anything but B12 is usually a code word amongst ballplayers also for steroids or HGH. It will be interesting to see how he reacts tomorrow although manager Joe Girardi did not think it would be a problem.
The Yankees remain tied for first with the Tampa Bay Rays who won tonight in walk-off fashion. The win over the Red Sox put the Sox six games back in the loss column.
