Bronx, NY (Aug 30) – The New York Yankees defeated the Oakland Athletics tonight by the score of 11-5. They came into tonight knowing they would have a tough battle with CY Young candidate Trevor Cahill. It did not turn out that way as they battered him for eight runs the most he has allowed all season.
Dustin Moseley got the start for the Yankees and was only able to pitch 4 1/3 innings giving up four runs on five hits with four walks and four strikeouts. Javier Vazquez came on in relief and for the second relief appearance in a row pitched very well. Vazquez pitched 4 2/3 innings giving up one run on two hits with one walk and six strikeouts. Vazquez picked up the win his 10th of the season.
Mark Teixeira who made his return to the lineup in a big way carried the Yankees offense. Teixeira had three hits including a home run and Robinson Cano and Nick Swisher had three hits. Brett Gardner, Marcus Thames, Jorge Posada, and Ramiro Pena all had a hit.
Thames had three RBI on another home run. Pena had an RBI, he does not get many hits, but the ones he does get are very big hits. Gardner drew two walks and Teixeira one.
The Yankees were down 3-0 in the first inning but came right back with three of their own. Swisher had a two run double after an RBI single by Cano. The Yankees took the lead on back-to-back solo homers by Teixeira and Cano in the third inning. The Yankees had a 6-4 lead and broke the game open in the fifth with five runs. They made a close game 11-4 and Oakland added a run in the eighth but the game would be final at 11-5.
The Yankees started the longest home stand of the season in a good way. They will play tomorrow night and Wednesday night then play five straight day games. They will play Oakland three more games in this series before they face Toronto and Baltimore.
The Yankees remain tied for first with the Tampa Bay Rays after their win tonight. The Yankees will send Phil Hughes to the mound tomorrow against Vin Mazzaro.
