Santana pitches a gem as Mets win 1-0 over Philly

By Gary W. Marchese Jr.

Philadelphia, PA (Aug 7) – The New York Mets defeated the Philadelphia Phillies this evening by the score of 1-0. Johan Santana made the start and was brilliant having a no-hitter broken up in the sixth inning and pitching 71/3 innings giving up no runs on four hits with three walks and six strikeouts.

Francisco Rodriguez picked up the five out save. Rodriguez made it interesting in the eighth inning loading the bases with a walk before striking out Ross Gload to end the inning. Rodriguez pitched a perfect ninth inning with a strikeout.

Jeff Francoeur who hit a solo home run provided the Mets offense. The Mets were 0-9 with runners in scoring position and left eight men on base. Jose Reyes, Angel Pagan, Carlos Beltran, and David Wright each had a hit.

Henry Blanco and Johan Santana each had a hit and Francoeur had the one big hit. Wright and Ike Davis each drew a walk. Ruben Tejada who was recalled today did not get a hit but he made three good defensive plays to help win the game. Fernando Martinez who made his first major league appearance of the year was 0-1 tonight.

The Mets trail the Atlanta Braves by eight games in the NL East and trail the wild card by 7 ½ games, this was a must win for the Mets. The season is on the line here for the Mets and they really need a win tomorrow as well. The Mets drew to within six games of second place Philadelphia.

There is not much time left and the Mets have to jump over several teams to make the postseason. The Mets do not seem to put everything together though, when they pitch they do not hit and when they hit they do not pitch.

The Mets will send R.A. Dickey to the mound against Roy Halladay. It will not be an easy task for the Mets but Dickey has been great for them this season and you never know on any given day.
