Chicago, IL (Aug 29) – The New York Yankees defeated the Chicago White Sox this afternoon by the score of 2-1. Ivan Nova made the start and pitched 5 2/3 innings giving up one run on five hits with one walk and seven strikeouts.
The Yankees bullpen was very good today, Kerry Wood pitched one scoreless inning giving up two walks; Joba Chamberlain pitched 1 1/3 innings giving up no runs on one hit with a strikeout. Chamberlain was throwing as hard as we have seen since he first was called up. He even hit 100 on the gun once today and was consistently 96+. His slider was nasty also and he pitched the eighth one day after Robertson struggled badly so it will be interesting to see if Joe Girardi will be switching the bullpen also.
The other day Girardi said he would reevaluate the rotation at the end of the day and Nova has not done anything to be taken out of the rotation so I could see A.J. Burnett being taken out of the rotation but I am sure we will find out more later. Mariano Rivera picked up his 27th save of the season with a scoreless inning; he did give up a rare walk.
The Yankees offense struggled, they are feeling the effect of not having Alex Rodriguez, and today they did not have Mark Teixeira either. Marcus Thames continues to be hot hitting his third home run in two games and since he has come back from the disabled list in early July, he is hitting 366 with a bunch of home runs.
Brett Gardner had a hit and an RBI, Nick Swisher had a hit, and Robinson Cano had a hit. Curtis Granderson had a hit, Francisco Cervelli had a great day with four hits, and throwing out a runner at second, he called a good game with Nova.
Cervelli has not had a three hit game since early May and it was his first four hit game of the season.
The Yankees took a 1-0 lead in the second inning on Thames solo home run. They extended their lead to 2-0 in the third inning on a Gardner RBI single. That was the Yankees final score of the game.
The White Sox scored their only run in the fifth inning. The Yankees bullpen took over from there and shut down the White Sox the rest of the game.
The Yankees finished a six game road trip at 3-3 and will now head home for a 10 game home stand. The Yankees are currently ½ game ahead of the Tampa Bay Rays in the AL east with them taking on the Red Sox tonight.
The Yankees will play the Oakland Athletics tomorrow with Dustin Moseley facing Trevor Cahill who is having a great year. The series with Oakland will be four games and then three with the Blue Jays and three with the Orioles.
